[01] DEMONSTRATION - PYROI CROSSING POINT
Greek Cypriots renewed on Sunday their call for the opening of a
crossing point at Pyroi, located at the old Larnaca-Nicosia highway,
which has been closed since July 1974, when Turkish troops invaded
Cyprus and occupied 37% of the island`s northern part.
Inhabitants of Aglantzia and Athienou municipalities and of Piroy,
Abvelero and Yeri communities, which are bordering the cease-fire line,
gathered on Sunday at the end of the old highway which used to link
Cyprus capital with the coastal town of Larnaca and approved a petition
with which they call on the UN Mission in Cyprus to act so that the
Turkish Cypriot side gives its consent for the opening of the Pyori
crossing point.
``The violation of the right to free movement creates very serious
problems in the everyday life of thousands of people. Particularly the
avenue from Nicosia to Larnaca which runs through our cities, remains
closed and its crossing is prohibited since 1974,`` the petition said,
adding that ``this fact creates huge difficulties and problems for the
inhabitants of our municipalities and communities as well as for
thousands of people who travel to and from Nicosia.``
