Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou, who participated Monday in the EU General Affairs and Foreign Affairs Councils, held on the sidelines of the Councils a series of meetings with EU and EP officials.

The Cypriot Foreign Minister held a tete a tete meeting with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso as well as with his Finnish counterpart Alex Stubb.

He also met with the Leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Guy Verhofstadt with whom he discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus problem as well as the EU regulation on direct trade of Cyprus` northern Turkish occupied areas with the EU, which was sent to the European Parliament by the European Commission.

Verhofstadt, who was briefed extensively on the regulation issue, said he would study carefully the Cypriot position on the issue.

Kyprianou will continue his contacts in the Belgian capital on Tuesday and is due to meet with Foreign Minister of Belgium, Steven Vanackere, whose country will assume the EU presidency in the second half of 2010.

He will also hold a meeting with President of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Martin Schultz with whom he is expected to discuss the direct trade regulation. Kyprianou will also meet with the Cypriot MEPs.

The Cypriot Foreign Minister will also have a meeting with Olli Rehn, Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

The government of Cyprus considers the direct trade regulation to be legally wrong, since it would mean trade with the areas of the Republic of Cyprus on which the government does not exercise effective control.
