[01] IACOVOU - JOINT STATEMENTPresidential Commissioner George Iacovou has said that issuing a joint statement by the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus was not feasible. In a written statement, commenting on remarks by Ozdil Nami, aide to Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, that the joint statement was almost ready, Iacovou clarified that during their last meeting of the leaders in the framework of talks to solve the Cyprus problem, the Turkish Cypriot side requested that a joint statement be issued after their March 30 meeting. Iacovou points out that the Greek Cypriot side did not make any commitment in this direction and that the aides of the leaders held two meetings, during which the Turkish Cypriot side submitted various documents, which indicated the distance between the aims and expectations of either side. He adds that, despite efforts by the Greek Cypriot side to determine convergence, this was not achieved, and during the last meeting of the aides on March 27 a deadlock was recorded. For this reason and due to the narrow time margin until the next meeting of the leaders, issuing a joint statement is not feasible. [02] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS ISSUEGovernment Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said that a solution of the Cyprus problem is possible, provided that Turkey, which holds 37% of Cyprus territory since 1974, submits at the negotiating table constructive positions. The Spokesman noted that the international community and especially the EU must exert pressure on Turkey, in a more decisive manner, so that Ankara changes its stance and assured that the Greek Cypriot side will continue negotiations in a spirit of good will. Stephanou, who will meet today in London with Minister of State for Europe Chris Bryant, visited during the weekend the city of Cardiff, where he inaugurated the Cypriot community center. In his speech there, Stephanou referred to the ongoing UN led Cyprus talks, noting that despite difficulties, our steadfast conviction is that a solution is possible, provided that the Turkish side submits at the negotiating table more constructive proposals. [03] BULGARIAN MEP - CYPRUSAny initiatives in Cyprus on a European level must have the meaning of an overall Cyprus settlement, stated Euro MP and former Bulgarian Vice Prime Minister Ivailo Kalfin has said.Invited to comment on the mobilization of the procedure for the discussion by the International Trade Committee at the European Parliament of the direct trade regulation between the EU and the Turkish occupied areas in Cyprus, the Bulgarian MEP said the Lisbon Treaty does not pose in any way on its agenda, nor does it add or demand the review of the mechanism defined by the European Council regulation, 866/2004 of the 29th April 2004. I share the position for to achieve unity in Cyprus based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality. With this meaning, any initiatives at a European level should be under an overall Cyprus settlement, Kalfin added. Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
