[01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - CYPRUS QUESTIONHouse President Marios Garoyian has said that if the international community and the UN do not exert pressure on Ankara to solve the Cyprus question on the basis of UN resolutions, high level agreements and the international and European law, the UN will fail in their current effort for a Cyprus settlement.Garoyian stressed that we refuse to accept a settlement that will not restore the just cause and the rights of our country and our people. He added that we are ready to reach an honest and fair compromise, but we do not accept illegitimate solutions and closing of the Cyprus question in a way that will not allocate justice, terminate the occupation, restore the unity of state, people and institutions and will not terminate illegal settling. Furthermore, he underlined that we do not accept a settlement that will be the result of a virgin birth or will provide Turkey guarantor or intervention rights. We are ready for a historic compromise, a bicommunal, bizonal federal settlement. We reject a settlement providing for a confederation and two states, he said. Garoyian underlined that we want a settlement of the Cyprus problem the soonest possible and we accept that a settlement of the Cyprus question will be a painful compromise, we do not accept a settlement on the basis of conditions, and Turkeys goals pursuits. House President said that the UN has not achieved to lead to an agreed settlement, because obviously they did not manage to address the Turkish intransigence and arrogance. Garoyian also said that responsibilities of the UN and the international community are huge for the fact that the Cyprus problem has not been solved for so many years and that they must make Turkey to respect the international law, human rights and international rule of law. Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since September 2008, with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.
