  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS EU LEADERS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said he looks forward to close cooperation with the EU leadership elected on Thursday evening during an informal meeting of the EU leaders.

Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy was named the EUs first president while British Catherine Ashton was appointed High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Pierre de Boissieu was elected Secretary-General of the Council Secretariat.

Speaking in Brussels after the meeting, President Christofias said, I would like to express my congratulations and note that we look forward to a close and constructive cooperation.

He said that with this decision, the EU is now ready to undertake action based on the Lisbon Treaty, which will come into effect on 1st December.

We hope that with its implementation, the EU will become more effective and powerful so it can play a more active role in international relations and promote the principles and values on which it is based, President Christofias remarked.

He also said we will work so that this course will lead to a Europe with greater cohesion and a more social face, a Europe that will be closer to its citizens, will be more democratic, fairer and will be a factor of improvement, prosperity and stability.

Concluding, the Cypriot President said we expect that it will be able to decisively contribute in the resolution of problems and consolidation of peace and stability, with full respect and cooperation with the wider international community.

    [02] HOUSE PRESIDENT - BRUSSELS

President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has expressed his complete satisfaction with the meetings he has held in Brussels with the heads of political groups at the European Parliament (EP) as well as other senior European officials.

In statements to the press, Garoyian said that during those meetings he had the opportunity to brief his interlocutors on the course of the ongoing UN-led direct negotiations to reach a Cyprus solution and to express ``our will for a solution as soon as possible``.

A solution, he added, which will meet the expectations of the Cypriot people and be based on the principles and values of the EU and on UN resolutions, and not just any solution``, as he noted.

The Cyprus problem cannot be solved with wishes or nice words, but with Turkey being forced by the international community to change its rigorous stance and respond to the spirit and the letter of the Charter of the United Nations and the European acquis, he stressed.

    [03] BRITISH PM CYPRUS ISSUE

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown notes in an article that "this is a crucial moment for Cyprus and its people," and in a message to the leaders of the two communities says they can make history and the United Kingdom will support them, noting that with flexibility and compromise, an agreement is possible next year.

Brown says he had the opportunity to discuss recent developments in the settlement negotiations with President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias in London last week and that he looks forward to meeting Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat soon.

He adds that Cypriots from both communities have made a "huge contribution" to life and society in the United Kingdom and have integrated into British society, while fully retaining their own distinct identities.

    [04] CHINA CYPRUS ISSUE

China`s new Ambassador to Cyprus Li Guobang said his country attributes great importance to the development of friendly relations with Cyprus, adding that China is ready to work with Cyprus in efforts to build a better future for stable bilateral cooperation.

The new Ambassador was speaking on Thursday at the ceremony for the presentation of his credentials to President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, who said Cyprus, as an EU member, is willing to contribute to the development of its multidimensional relationship with China and help achieve acceptable compromises in sectors were there may be differences between the two parties.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, he expressed his sincere gratitude for the steadfast support of China to efforts for a settlement, noting that he was struggling with the necessary political will and flexibility to reach a mutually acceptable solution, on the basis of international law and the principles on which the EU is established.
