  • [01] LEADERS MEETING

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will have a new meeting on Tuesday, in the framework of the ongoing direct negotiations on the question of Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus are expected to talk about the issue of the competences of the federal government and there will be further discussions about the external relations issue.

During their last meeting on 22 October, the leaders maintained their positions on the property issue, said Alexander Downer, Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General on Cyprus.

The two leaders have been engaged in talks since September 2008 with a view to find a mutually acceptable solution that will reunite the country, divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.

[02] ELSI CHRISTOFIA OYIA TALAT EVENT

First Lady of Cyprus Elsi Christofia and the spouse of the Turkish Cypriot leader Oyia Talat have sent the message that rapprochement between the islands two communities constitutes an essential ingredient of efforts to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

The two ladies were speaking at a bi-communal event held on Sunday at Pyla village, bordering the northern Turkish occupied part of the island, where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots live together. The event, titled Love and Peace for our Country, was organised by the political parties of the two communities which participated in the bicommunal dialogue, in co-operation with the local authorities of Pyla and UNIFICYP, under the auspices of Slovak Ambassador here Anna Turenicova.

Addressing the event, Elsi Christofias welcomed the promotion of political cooperation between the two communities in the framework of rapprochement. Rapprochement constitutes the means for building trust and for establishing the prospect of peaceful co-existence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, she pointed out.

Cyprus First Lady noted that although rapprochement alone cannot solve the problem, it can offer an important contribution towards restoring trust between the two communities on the basis of mutual respect, friendship, love and acceptance of diversity.

[03] EU COMMISSIONER SOLUTION - LANGUAGES

EU Commissioner responsible for Multilingualism Leonard Orban has stressed the importance in a possible solution of the Cyprus problem of learning the language of the other community in Cyprus.

Orban, who is paying a two day official visit to Cyprus, was speaking in a press conference.

The fact that more people will be able to learn the language of the other community is extremely important, he said adding that this is the key message of EU Multilingualism policy. We would like to see here more Greek Cypriots learning Turkish language and more Turkish Cypriots learning Greek language, he pointed out.

This will no doubt strengthen the dialogue, will consolidate the trust, will help people not only to tolerate the others but also to live together, he added.

Orban recommended Cyprus to organize the system in such a way that to encourage more and more the Greek Cypriots to learn the Turkish language, and the Turkish Cypriots to learn Greek language.
