[02] BRITISH RESERACHER - EATING DISORDERS

Fake images of human body in the media, modern eating habits where food has been disembedded from social activities, as well as genes are some of the most important factors that lead to eating disorders today, according to a top British researcher on eating disorders.

In an interview with the Cyprus News Agency, Janet Treasure, Professor of Psychiatry at Kings College, London and one of the top researchers about eating disorders worldwide, speaks about the causes of disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, while at the same time explaining the best treatments for each of them.

Treasure, who was in Cyprus for a series of seminars for the public and health professionals, points out the importance of setting a team of professionals, a pool of expertise for eating disorder who will help Cyprus deal with the problem.

She maintains that eating disorders can be recognized in early stages when someone seems to have a paradoxical behavior about food, maybe avoiding meals, or not eating when going out with friends and yet seeming to be interested in food, perhaps in recipes. As she explains, sometimes anorexia is apparent because there is a lost of weight, but in bulimia there may not be loss of weight but someone could notice unusual behavior about food
