  • [01] LEADERS NEGOTIATIONS - MEETING

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat hold on Wednesday their third meeting in the framework of the second round of UN-led direct negotiations, which began in September 2008, with a view to solve the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

Christofias and Talat decided during their previous meeting in September 2009 to accelerate the pace of their meetings, which take place in the UN-controlled buffer zone. They have already scheduled their next three meetings to be held October 8, 14 and 15.

In statements after their previous meeting, Christofias said that the Turkish side had shifted its stance on the issue of executive powers, in the context of negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem, adding that the new revised proposals on governance would be sent to experts for further consideration.

    [02] SPOKESMAN GREECE - COOPERATION

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said on Wednesday that cooperation, coordination and close contact with Greece is a dire necessity, adding that the Cypriot government would work with the new Greek government to face the challenges ahead, especially in view of Turkey`s evaluation by the EU in December.

Replying to questions regarding the composition of the new government in Greece, Stephanou said ``the formation of the government is the absolute right of the Prime Minister in Greece, and the President in Cyprus.``

``Cooperation, coordination, close contact with Greece is a dire necessity, and our government will work with this new government of Greece in order to establish close contact, coordination and common action to face the challenges ahead, especially now, in view of December, with Turkey`s evaluation,`` he said. He added that new Prime Minister George Papandreou also expressed the same wish when he met with President of the Republic Demetris Christofias in Cyprus recently, and during a telephone conversation after the victory of PASOK in Sunday`s elections in Greece.

    [03] TECHNICAL COMMITTEE MOSQUE

The technical committee for the Preservation, Physical Protection and Restoration of the Immovable Cultural Heritage of Cyprus, set up in the framework of the UN-led direct negotiations for the Cyprus problem, began Tuesday cleaning and restoration work at the mosque in the Avdimou village, in the Limassol district.

In statements to CNA, Greek Cypriot head of the committee, Takis Hadjidemetriou, said that on October 15th, the technical committee will carry out similar work for cleaning and restoration of the Saint Therapontas Church, in the Turkish occupied village of Angastina.

He said that the technical committee was set up with a view to practically intervene where necessary for the rescue and protection of cultural heritage in Cyprus, including churches, mosques and other historic monuments. Hadjidemetriou went on to say that the committee has approved a list of monuments, which are in danger to collapse. Priority will be given to those monuments, he said, which will be restored. Other monuments will be cleaned.

He noted that the effort is a bicommunal one, noting that both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots participate in the work, which is carried out.
