[01] MINISTER - WATER PROTECTION
The protection of water from pollution is of great importance,
especially today that we are suffering from water shortages as a result
of prolonged drought, the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources
and the Environment Michalis Polynikis underlined on Wednesday.
Speaking at the opening of the 2nd European Conference on the
Environmental Applications of Advanced Oxidation Processes, organised
by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the
University of Cyprus, along with the Technical University of Crete and
the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Polynikis said that pollution
control should be continuous and rigorous so as to ensure that the
scarce and valuable water is available in such quality that does not
jeopardize public health, the fauna, the flora and the environment in
general.
A well protected environment from pollution ensures the best quality of
our water and of our soil he added.
As Polynikis noted, by implementing the Law on the Control of Pollution
of Water and Soil and the Law on the Protection and Management of
Water, Cyprus is committed to reducing and controlling the pollution of
water and soil, to improve and protect natural water resources and to
improve the health and the welfare of the population.
