[01] UNSG CYPRUSThe United Nations Organization continues to support full-fledged negotiations in Cyprus, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said in his report on the work of the organization issued in view of the UN General Assembly.In the chapter on peace and security, the Secretary General said a key role of the United Nations is to assist national actors in resolving conflict at an early stage and to help build national capacity to sustain peace and protect human rights. ``Without political settlements, the world will be left with festering conflicts which place a heavy burden on humanitarian delivery systems and on peacekeeping,`` he added. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since September last year with a view to reach a settlement that will reunite the country. The second round of the UN-led talks will begin on Thursday. [02] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS SYRIA VISITPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias continues his contacts in Damascus on Tuesday, in the framework of an official visit to Syria.According to the programme of the visit, President Christofias will be holding a meeting with Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Naji Otri, followed by talks and the signing of bilateral agreements. He will also be meeting Speaker of the People`s Assembly of the Syrian Arab Republic Mahmoud Al Abrash, followed by talks. Later on, accompanied by his wife, Elsie, he will be received by Patriarch of Antioch and all the East Ignatius IV and will visit the Church of Saint Ananias and the Great Mosque in Damascus. [03] PILGRIMS AYIOS MAMASThe illegal Turkish Cypriot regime, in northern occupied Cyprus, has lifted obstacles it had raised in the past few days and will allow Greek Cypriot pilgrims to celebrate, through prayer, a saints day in the Turkish occupied church of Ayios Mamas.Around six hundred and fifty Greek Cypriot pilgrims will pass through Limnitis crossing point, on the northwest, on a pilgrimage to the Turkish occupied church of Saint Mamas, in Morphou area, to pray on Wednesday to celebrate the saints day. After a long day of consultations with Cyprus Foreign Ministry and the Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou, Greek Cypriots will not show any kind of identification at the crossing point, as the Turkish Cypriot occupation regime had demanded, Costas Michaelides, President of Kato Pyrgos Community Council, in the Limnitis region, said today in statements to CNA. The Turkish Cypriot occupied regime had demanded that the Greek Cypriots show identity cards or passports at Limnitis crossing point. Michaelides said that the Pyrgos Community Council demanded that pilgrims pass through the crossing point without displaying any papers, as it had been agreed between Commissioner Iacovou, Turkish Cypriot leaders advisor Ozdil Nami and UNSGs Special Representative to Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun. Iacovou, Nami and Zerihoun traveled on August 10 from the Turkish occupied Limnitis village to Kato Pyrgos village in the area of Tilliria, in order to examine the preparations for the opening of the crossing point at Limnitis. Free and without any obstacles passage from Limnitis crossing point will take place, as scheduled, Michaelides noted. Andreas Karos, President of the Committee for the opening of the Limnitis crossing point confirmed that tomorrows pilgrimage will take place, as agreed. The Cypriots, he continued, should do everything possible to reunite the island, noting that this could be achieved with good will, as in the case of Germany.
