  • [01] DEFENCE MINISTER - ANNIVERSARY OF TYLLIRIA BATTLES - CYPRUS PROBLEM

Cyprus Defence Minister Costas Papacostas has said that the sacrifices of those killed in defence of freedom in Cyprus will be vindicated once the impacts of the Turkish invasion of the island and the ongoing occupation of its northern part are lifted and the country is reunited.

Speaking during a memorial service for those killed during the battles in north-west Tylliria with Turkish fighters in August 1964, Papacostas said that having this as our firm goal we are working hard, with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias heading this struggle, to heal the wounds of the invasion and set concrete foundations so that peace, prosperity and security prevail in our country.

He said that this would be possible only with the termination of illegal settling and the restoration and safeguarding of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the people.

These are the goals which we are pursuing to fulfill by achieving a viable and functional settlement of the Cyprus question, he noted and added that this settlement must be based on the UN relevant resolutions and the international and European law principles.

There must be a settlement that will lift the Turkish invasion, terminate the illegal settling and reunify the territory, the people, the institutions and the economy of the state, in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, he added, noting that peaceful coexistence and returning to the occupied areas is our unwavering vision.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

[02] HELIOS AIR CRASH - RELATIVES OF VICTIMS - CANDLE LIGHTING

Relatives of the victims of an air crash, in 2005, that killed all 121 persons on board, lighted on Saturday night candles in all towns of the government controlled areas of Cyprus, in memory of their beloved ones.

The candles were lit in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paralimni.

The memorial service for the 121 victims will be held on Friday, August 14.
