Presenting the priorities of the Swedish Presidency of EU in the second half of 2009, Bild said that although the European Union is not a defining factor in the solution of the Cyprus problem he, as well as other European leaders who have spoken with President Christofias and Talat, are impressed by the determination of these two courageous political leaders to overcome the problem of division, which I believe is a shame.

"Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin wall, there is still a divided capital in Europe and we must overcome this problem," he added.

Referring to the UN, he stressed that it remains to be seen how the UN will help the two parties in their effort to find a negotiated settlement.

I think that the European Commission is also ready to offer technical support to the negotiations. Important issues regarding the acquis communautaire are involved in the process of the negotiations, he added, stressing that he does not favour endless discussions on them. Thats why the Commissions help is needed.

The Swedish FM, answering questions about Turkeys accession course, said that the opening of new chapters in the EU Turkey accession negotiations, including the energy chapter, is being examined and available options will be looked into.
