[01] CYPRUS - TURKISH EXERCISEGovernment Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said on Wednesday that the Republic of Cyprus has made representations to the UN and the EU regarding the violations of its sovereignty, air space and territorial waters by Turkey, in the context of an illegal search and rescue exercise in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic.Stephanou said this was not the first time such an incident has occurred, noting that it was Turkish practice to behave in this manner. ``Of course we deplore and report these illegalities and violations,`` he added. [02] CYPRUS - TURKISH VIOLATIONSCyprus Permanent Representative to the UN, Minas A. Hadjimichael, in a letter to the UN Secretary General, protested new violations of the international air traffic regulations and the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus by military aircraft of the Turkish Air Force recorded from 1st April until 28 May 2009.In a letter, which is dated 5 June 2009 and was circulated on Tuesday as a document of the General Assembly and of the Security Council, Hadjimichael strongly protested the violations by Turkey and called for their immediate cessation. He said Turkeys policy of non-observance of rules and regulations governing international aviation continues to gravely jeopardize flight safety and perpetuate insecurity and apprehension on the island. Furthermore, he added, Turkeys persistent provocations, aimed at consolidating the de facto division of Cyprus and further strengthening the illegal secessionist entity in the occupied areas, seriously undermine all efforts towards reunification and reconciliation``. [03] CYPRIOT PARTIES - CENSUSLeaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties urged on Wednesday the leaders of the islands two communities to discuss and possibly authorise a census to be carried out by an international organisation, in a bid to clarify the issue of ``settlers in Cyprus``, created after the 1974 Turkish invasion.Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties met in their regular meeting under the auspices of the Slovak embassy to Cyprus and discussed the issue of settlers in Cyprus, proposed by the Greek Cypriot Green party. ``The political parties urged the leaders of the two communities to discuss the issue of a census of the population in Cyprus, being contacted by an independent international organisation accepted and authorized by both sides,`` a joint communique issued after the meeting said. The communique, read out by Slovak Ambassador to Cyprus Anna Turenicova, adds that Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties ``consider that such a census will ensure mutual trust between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and they facilitate the prospect of reaching a viable and just solution.`` [04] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - TOURISMPresident Demetris Christofias called on Wednesday for joint action for tourism as state revenues from tourist sector decline.Addressing the General Assembly of the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents, Christofias assured that the government in cooperation with all stakeholders will continue efforts to support tourism and will not hesitate to take swift and well-thought decisions for the benefit of the Cypriot tourist industry and the economy. Recalling the government`s 52-million-euro plan to boost tourism in the mid of the global financial crisis, Christofias said that regardless of the measures taken, the basic condition for success in the tourist field is the maximization of respect both from foreigners and Cypriot tourists.`` The President said that the picture from tourism so far is not satisfying as state revenues from tourism for the period of January April 2009 declined by 7,5%, while tourist arrivals decreased by 8.9%. ``Now is the time to work together to cut the losses of the crisis provided that we learn from the omissions of the past and move together towards the right direction,`` he concluded.
