  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - CYPRUS QUESTION

Negotiations are difficult but there is no other alternative because it is only by peaceful means that we can solve the Cyprus question, Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has said, adding that major powers as the US, Britain which is a guarantor power, Russia and the EU, of which Cyprus is a member state have to show understanding.

Christofias was speaking during a meeting he had on Tuesday with children of the New York Eleftheria-Pangyprios football teams, noting that Greeks and Cypriots living abroad support Cyprus cause to terminate the Turkish occupation of the island and safeguard peace and peaceful coexistence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Christofias referred to his ongoing negotiations with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, which began in September last year, noting that the Cyprus problem must be solved only through the restoration of human rights of all Cypriots, when refugees will return to their ancestral homes and properties and when Turkey will withdraw its troops from the island.

He also stressed the major problem of Turkish settlers, who double the number of Turkish Cypriots, noting that these settlers must leave Cyprus.

President Christofias noted that we are trying to convince major powers to support Cyprus, following human rights principles.

Needless to say, he added, that during the last eight years the US administration did not respect the international law principles or any other principles, and that is why the American people are now suffering from a deep crisis, unemployment and other forthcoming disasters.

He wished that new US President Barack Obama, who appears as a new politician with vision, will succeed in everything he has pledged to fulfill for the American people and will also follow a new policy with regard to international relations. We also wish that the principles of justice will be implemented for Cyprus as well, he added.

Christofias noted that the relations between Cyprus and the US are not bad but can improve. And we will try to make them even better, he noted.

[02] GREEK PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM - HUMAN RIGHTS

Cyprus problem is an important issue of human rights that afflicts the region, the President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias has said.

In his toast at an official dinner in honour of visiting Azeri president Ilham Aliyev, President Papoulias underlined that an extremely important issue of human rights that continues to afflict our region is the Cyprus problem, where part of a country member of the EU is still under the Turkish occupation, and Nicosia remains the last wall-divided capital of Europe.

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began last September direct negotiations with a view to reunify Cyprus, which has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied one third of the islands territory.

    [03] POETRY MEETING - NICOSIA

Poets Pascale Petit from France, Peter McDonald from Northern Ireland and Edvins Raups from Latvia join Michalis Ganas from Greece, Duska Vrhovac from Serbia and Turkish Cypriot Mehmet Yashin will participate in the international poetry meeting under the title In the beginning is the word.

A total of eleven highly acclaimed poets from ten European countries will take part in the meeting. ``In the beginning is the word`` is the first event of the project TRIPTYCH: POETRY - IDENTITY COEXISTENCE that will be organised in 2009 and 2010 in Cyprus, Sweden, France and Greece.

The organisers of the event in Nicosia and project leaders are the Cypriot Cultural organisations Ideogramma and Atlantis Productions. The event will take place on March 21 at Famagusta Gate.
