[01] HOUSE PRESIDENT PARLIAMENTARY WORKHouse of Representatives President Marios Garoyian has said that the second regular session of the ninth parliamentary period was very productive in all sectors.Presenting the activities of the House during the period under review, Garoyian said the parliamentary committees convened 524 times, the plenary voted 222 laws and 19 bills, and approved 143 regulations. Furthermore, 74 proposals for the employment or extension of employment of non permanent civil servants were examined. Garoyian said that 258 topics were submitted for discussion, many of which were examined, and questions were posed to Ministers by MPs. He explained that that the drop in the approval of legislation and regulations, and the examination of issues, compared to the previous session, was due to the fact that the House postponed its works because of the presidential elections of February 2008. Garoyian said the Parliamentary Committee on the Cyprus File convened 34 times, listened to testimonies and collected material. The House President made special reference to the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, the promotion of international relations and Cyprus` interests abroad, and activities related to membership of the EU, such as harmonisation procedures and the implementation of directives. [02] IPU PRESIDENT CYPRUS SOLUTIONThe Inter-Parliamentary Union President, Pier Ferdinando Casini, has reiterated his support for the struggle of the people of Cyprus for solution of the Cyprus problem, on the basis of relevant UN resolutions. Casini was speaking during a meeting with the President of the House of Representatives, Marios Garoyian.According to an official announcement, Garoyian briefed Casini on recent developments in the Cyprus problem and the Greek Cypriot will to find a viable and functional bizonal bicommunal federal solution in line with the relevant UN resolutions and EU principles. Efforts to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, have resumed earlier this month with direct negotiations between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. [03] INDEPENDENCE DAY PRESIDENT STRASBOURGA reception was held on Monday evening at the Council of Europe (CoE) building in Strasbourg, to mark the anniversary of Cyprus` Independence Day, in the presence of President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias, who will be addressing the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Tuesday.President Christofias was welcomed at the entrance of Palais de l` Europe by President of PACE Lluis Maria de Puig, Sweden`s Permanent Representative at the CoE who is presiding over the Committee of Minister Deputies Per Sjoogren, CoE General Secretary Terry Davis, CoE Deputy General Secretary Naud de Boer-Bukuicchio, and PACE General Secretary Mateo Sorinas. The event was organised by Cyprus delegation to PACE and Cyprus` delegation to CoE, and was attended by many officials and other guests. Also present at the reception were the MPs comprising the Cypriot parliamentary delegation to PACE Andros Kyprianou (head), Christos Pourgourides, Antigoni Papadopoulou and Fidias Sarrikas. [04] CYPRIOT SHOOTER GOLD MEDALCypriot shooter Andri Eleftheriou has won the gold medal in the womens shotgun skeet at the ISSF World Cup Final in Minsk.As the Cyprus Sports Writers Union correspondent reported from Minsk, Eleftheriou scored 73 out of 75 (25+24+24) and topped the table, leaving behind Haley Dunn (USA) who scored 71 and Katiuscia Spada (Italy) with 68.
