  • [01] PRESIDENT CHINA SCHOOL

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias visited Wednesday the Zhong Xin Yuan Elementary School in China, which is twinned with a local school in Nicosia.

According to an official announcement, President Christofias said that he spent one of the most beautiful days he has spent during his stay in China.

The slogan of the Olympic Games is One World, One Dream, President Christofias noted and added: The dream is to see the children grow up in a peaceful environment and this is the dream of the children in Cyprus, who live in a divided country since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern part.

During the visit, the pupils offered gifts to the Cypriot President, who gave the school a silver miniature of the Kyrenia ship.

This is an ancient ship, entrenched in history, which was discovered near my home village. Thats why I feel like offering you a piece from my heart, Christofias told the headmaster.

President Christofias invited the pupils to visit Cyprus during the Games for the Small States of Europe, to be held in Cyprus in 2009.

President Christofias was accompanied by the Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou, the Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, the Ambassador of Cyprus in Beijing Marios Ieronimides, the Director of his Office Vasos Georgiou, and by members of the Cyprus Delegation to the Olympic Games headed by Kikis Lazarides, President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee.

President Christofias also visited the Chinese Marine Architecture Company and the Chinese Ship Registry, which cooperates with the Republic of Cyprus.

During those visits, President Christofias stressed the high level of economic and trade links between China and Cyprus and noted that there is room for improvement.
