[01] DOWNER UN SPECIAL ADVISER ARRIVALFormer Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, recently appointed as the UN Secretary General`s special adviser for Cyprus, arrived on the island, pledging the UNs commitment to do all possible to help with the process for a Cyprus settlement.Speaking to reporters upon his arrival, Downer said he looks forward to the work that lies ahead, noting it is a great honor to be appointed as the special adviser to the Secretary General on the issue of Cyprus. [02] CYPRIOT PRESIDENT SPEECHPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias assured that the Greek Cypriot side is entering new talks on Cyprus in September, extending a hand of good will and maintaining political fairness for a just, viable and mutually acceptable solution.In a speech at Paphos to mark the 1974 military coup against the democratically elected President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece, and the Turkish invasion which followed five days later, resulting in the illegal occupation of 37 percent of the Republic`s territory and its de facto division, President Christofias noted that there are still some very important and serious issues where core disagreements and differences remain. He expressed the hope that the Greek Cypriot side will meet the relevant desire by the Turkish Cypriot side on the outcome of the new talks. The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, decided Friday to start full-fledged negotiations on September 3rd, with a view to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem. [03] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS TALKSCyprus Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said the Greek Cypriot side will go to the direct talks with determination, flexibility, steadfastly adhering to international and European law principles.He told reporters after a memorial service in Nicosia for those who fell during the 1974 Turkish invasion, that we will remain consistent to the principles and it will become evident who really wants a solution and who is preventing one. [04] HOUSE PRESIDENT - TALKSPresident of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has said that the Greek Cypriot side is ready for a just compromise but is not willing to accept a Cyprus solution that would grant Turkey guarantee or intervention rights.Speaking at a church memorial service for four heroes of the Turkish invasion of 1974, in Germasogeia, Limassol, Garoyian said we are ready for a solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation, but we reject a solution of confederation or two states. We are ready for an honorable and just compromise, but we would not accept a solution that would result from a virgin birth or grant Turkey guarantee or intervention rights.
