The Greek government has welcomed an agreement between the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities to begin negotiations in early September, with a view to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem. We welcome the agreement between the two leaders to begin talks towards the reunification of Cyprus in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with a single personality, a single citizenship and a single sovereignty, Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyianni said in a statement. The solution, she stressed, must be functional and viable and it must restore the injustice on the island in line with UN decisions and European Union principles.

The road to a solution will be an uphill road. We need strict adherence to principles and good will from everybody, she said, adding that in particular we need creative work on the part of the two sides, without outside intervention, without artificial timetables and without arbitration. Bakoyianni reiterated that Greece supports the new negotiating process and assures that it will remain a firm supporter of Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and the Cypriot political leadership in their efforts for a settlement.

Unity is a fundamental prerequisite, an absolute necessity to achieve the common goal which is the reunification of Cyprus, she concluded.
