  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - LISBON

House of Representatives President Marios Garoyian briefed parliament presidents of EU member states on the recent developments in the Cyprus problem, on the sidelines of the meeting of EU Presidents of Parliament in Lisbon which wrapped up yesterday.

Speaking in the meeting on the ``Challenges and Priorities of the European agenda``, Garoyian said issues created by the referendum in Ireland on the Lisbon Treaty should be overpassed creatively so that our actions could be focused in the improvement of the quality of European citizens and to the reassurance of world peace, stability and prosperity.

``We should face as a challenge our ability to alter today`s temporary deadlock to a factor of cultivation of a closer cooperation between us, to a catalyst for enhancing the solidarity climate and further consolidation of the idea that any problems can be solved better with common efforts``, he said.

It is important, he added, to set as a challenge the maintenance of our role as a guarantor union of democracy, human rights, the world force which contributes to solution of conflicts and cares for the respect and principles of the international right and the Chart of the United Nations.

Garoyian expressed belief that the EU has the duty to stay dedicated to its international role, as it is the only power which can contribute effectively to the genuine goals which are related with the support and foundation of democracy, international stability, security, peace and freedom.

The meeting was addressed by the Prime Minister of Portugal Jose Socrates, the President of the French National Assembly Bernard Accoyer and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] RUSSIA - ECONOMY

Russia is by far the most important economic partner of Cyprus and the prospects of this cooperation are even greater, said Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport on his return from Moscow, Stavrakis noted that many efforts were made in order to take Cyprus out of Russia`s two black lists and maintain the privileged position of Cyprus as the country through which investments are made in Russia.

He expressed the belief that a lot of progress has been made and said that with the visit of the Cypriot President Demetris Christofias in Russia next October any problems existed will be solved and Cyprus will fully exploit the large economic possibilities of Russia.

He added that while the rest of the world is facing problems of cost, Russia exports petrol and feedstock maintaining a high level of development.

In Moscow Stavrakis met with his Russian counterpart and other officials.
