  • [01] CYPRIOT FM BRUSSELS GULF STATES

Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou has expressed the hope that the meetings he is expected to have in Brussels with his Arab counterparts will mark the start of enhanced bilateral relations with the Gulf states.

Speaking at Larnaca airport, on departure for Brussels to participate in the General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) the Minister said that EU Foreign Ministers are set to discuss issues relating to WTO/DDA, Africa (Somalia, Zimbabwe), Georgia and the situation in Lebanon.

He further said that he will also have the opportunity to meet counterparts from countries of the Gulf.

It is a significant meeting because our policy is to warm up and strengthen our relations with the Arab countries, the Minister said, noting that Cyprus is facing problems at the Organisation of Islamic Conference and Turkeys moves and initiatives in the region.

Kyprianou will then travel to Algeria where he will meet his counterpart and government officials. It is a friendly country. Algeria is especially important for us as a member of the Arab League and the OIC, the FM said.

Delegates to the conference talked about setting up a Greek-American political action committee (PAC), which will be supported by large organisations among the Greek community in the US to promote national issues, strengthen the role of the Greek community and back Greek-American politicians and those supporting Greeks issues.

Cypriot Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, addressing the PSEKA conference, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting and with the action taken by Greek Americans.
