  • [01] PRESIDENT - CYPRUS TALKS

President Demetris Christofias has stressed the need for a discussion on the substance of important aspects of the Cyprus question. Speaking two days before Fridays meeting with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, the President called for patience, adding that there is still a lot of work to be done at bicommunal teams of experts, dealing with all aspects of the Cyprus issue.

In statements after his meeting on Wednesday with the heads of the six Working Groups and the seven Technical Committees, he described the exchange of views as productive and said they reviewed the work done so far. We all believe that the substance of the issues at these talks must be discussed. Discussions must not be restricted to peripheral issues, he pointed out.

Six working groups and seven technical committees, set up in the context an agreement between President Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, are meeting to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations between the two leaders. He said that a lot of work has to be done by everyone, including the Turkish Cypriot side and expressed hope that there will be consensus.

We cannot say that there is a lot of progress and that meetings between the two community leaders must begin here and now. On the other hand, we cannot equally say that nothing is being achieved, he added. The objective, he explained, is to engage in discussions on the same basis in order to get to direct negotiations, with prospects for a political settlement that will reunite Cyprus, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Asked if discussions so far are on the same basis, he said this will be on the agenda of his meeting with Talat. Replying to other questions, he said it is too early to say that he and Talat will meet on June 21, noting that this will have to be assessed nearer the time.

President Christofias said he hopes tomorrows meeting with Talat will be a friendly and a successful political encounter, creating the preconditions for success to start the soonest possible direct negotiations.

The working groups are discussing governance and power sharing, EU matters, security and guarantees, territory, property and economic matters. The technical committees are discussing crime and criminal matters, economic and commercial matters, cultural heritage, crisis management, humanitarian and health matters and the environment.

    [02] PSEKA CONFERENCE - WASHINGTON

One of the major Greek American organisations is holding its annual meeting in Washington, with the participation of prominent personalities from across the country and Hellenes from around the world, who for the next couple of days will draft their future strategy on Cyprus. The annual conference of the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) opened here Wednesday with a meeting with Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Daniel Fried, Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs and other officials, who briefed delegates on US policy on Cyprus, Greco-Turkish relations and issues concerning the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

In his opening remarks, Cypriot Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou informed delegates about the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and President Demetris Christofias moves to promote a solution since he was elected President in February this year. Referring to the significance of Christofias meeting on Friday with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, Stephanou said that it comes at a very crucial time as far as the ongoing discussions between teams of experts from the islands two communities are concerned.

We believe that our good intentions will meet up with Mr. Talats good will, the Spokesman said, pointing out that the aim is to open the road for fully-fledged negotiations, but a pre-requisite is to be certain of the basis of a solution. He said we are committed to try our best to achieve tangible progress at a working level, to justify and support that kind of political negotiation, which, in a spirit of good will, will solve those disputes that cannot be resolved at a lower level.
