Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said that the presence of Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Titov in Cyprus was part of the international community`s efforts to help find a negotiated settlement in Cyprus. Speaking after Titov was received by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, Stephanou said ``this meeting is part of moves by the international community regarding the Cyprus problem, moves created by recent developments.``

He noted that Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council and that Cyprus believes the Council can and must assist efforts to reach a settlement, that will reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. ``We want, through collective action by all five permanent members, to make an effort to help the dialogue and efforts to find a solution and Mr. Titov`s presence here is in that direction,`` he pointed out.

Stephanou said the Cypriot government wants the international community engaged in this effort, as long as this effort had the right content, aiming at helping the dialogue between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities. ``Officially the dialogue begins today, with the hope that we will have results to move on to the second phase, which is the commencement of comprehensive negotiations, if the outcome justifies this process,`` he added.
