[01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT UNSG MEETINGCyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos plans to ask UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to go on with the implementation of the 8 July 2006 agreement reached between the two sides in Cyprus.President Papadopoulos arrived Saturday night in New York and he is scheduled to meet Sunday the UN Chief. During his stay in New York, the Cypriot President will address the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, meet the representatives of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council on Thursday and have separate meetings with heads of state and government. He told reporters on his arrival in New York that this was his first meeting with the UN Secretary General since the latters election and he was going to brief him on developments in the Cyprus problem. Among those to meet in New York is US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicolas Burns, who had announced his intention to visit Cyprus soon. Asked to comment on a recent statement by Burns that he was optimistic that substantive progress could be reached by the end of 2007 in efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, President Papadopoulos said it is our desire to use the period of time until the Presidential elections in Cyprus (February 2008) and I remind you that the latest UN Security Council resolution refers to preparations of negotiations. Every assistance in this direction is welcome. [02] UNSC GREEK FM CYPRUS PROBLEMThe Cyprus question was among the issues discussed here today by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Greeces Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis.Diplomatic sources said afterwards that emphasis was given on efforts to implement the 8 July 2006 agreement reached between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. The same sources said the UN Chief was following developments on Cyprus very closely. Ban is scheduled to meet tomorrow in New York with President Papadopoulos and plans to have a meeting with Talat on 16 October. Bakoyiannis told reporters that she had the opportunity to discuss the Cyprus problem with the UN Secretary General and repeat Greeces full backing of the 8 July agreement. What is needed, she added, was a positive response from the Turkish Cypriot side. [03] RYAN CYPRUS SETTLEMENTBritish Special Representative for Cyprus, Labour Member of Parliament, Joan Ryan, has pledged to work hard for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.In an interview with the London Greek Radio (LGR) the British official said she had set three principles on which she will base her duties as Britains Special Representative for Cyprus. The first principle, she said, was to work for achieving a bizonal, bicommunal federation based on political equality. The second principle, she added, was to avoid setting short-term party and political expediencies above efforts to find such a solution to the Cyprus question. The third principle, Ryan continued, was to be straight with both parties in the Cyprus problem and not to hide anything. [04] COMMISSIONER BARROT - CYPRUS - MARITIME CONFERENCEVice President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport Jacques Barrot arrived Saturday to Cyprus to attend the 10th Maritime Cyprus 2007 Conference to be held in the coastal town of Limassol.Commissioner Barrot will meet Sunday with the Minister of Communication and Works Maria Malahtou-Pampalli to discuss maritime matters of mutual interest.
