  • [01] SPOKESMAN - TURKISH VESSEL - SEISMIC RESEARCH

Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said on Monday that the Republic of Cyprus would react in the appropriate manner if its sovereign rights, its continental shelf or any other right that offends the nation is violated.

Replying to questions, Palmas said that, according to reports, Turkish vessel ``Piri Reis`` will be carrying out seismic research from September 10 to 22 in the area west or northwest of Cyprus.

``There is nothing more concrete relating to this information at this stage,`` he added as he commented on the reports.

Palmas noted that if the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus were impinged, then the Republic, as an independent state and a member of the international community, would do ``everything that has to be done in the event that there is any violation of its sovereign rights, its continental shelf or anything that offends the Republic.``

Cyprus has invited tenders from the oil industry to carry out oil exploration off its coast to determine whether there are any oil or natural gas reserves in its exclusive economic zone. Turkey has reacted to this with threats and protests to the UN, claiming it must have a say on such matters as well.

[02] CENTRAL BANK - INTEREST RATES

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) decided to keep its main interest rates unchanged.

Governor of the CBC, Athanasios Orphanides, told reporters that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously decided today to maintain its waiting mode and keep the official interest rates of the Central Bank of Cyprus unchanged.

The official interest rates of the Central Bank of Cyprus, that is the minimum bid rate on the main refinancing operations, the interest rate on the marginal lending facility and the interest rate on the overnight deposit facility remain unchanged at 4,50%, 5,00% and 3,00%, respectively.

The Governor said that following an extensive discussion, the MPC noted that domestic developments have not substantially changed since its last meeting on 17 July 2007, so as to warrant a change in domestic interest rates at this juncture.

    [03] SPOKESMAN - KARAMANLIS - AIR CRASH - REVELATION

Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said on Monday that he was shocked by a revelation by the Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis regarding an air crash in 2005, in which all 121 passengers and crew were killed.

The spokesman was referring to a crash of an HELIOS Boeing 737 in August 2005, flying from Larnaca to Prague via Athens, which crashed on the mountainside of Grammatikos, north of the Greek capital killing everybody on board, most of them Cypriot holidaymakers.

Asked what he would not wish to see happen again, in a second term in office, if reelected in Sundays poll in Greece, Karamanlis replied: ``What I would not like to happen to me again is for the Minister of Defence to call me and say that I have ten minutes to decide if I should shoot down a passenger plane with 121 people on board, including many young children.``
