  • [01] CYPRIOT FIREMEN - GREECE

Minister of Justice and Public Order Sophocles Sophocleous told CNA that it was the Republic of Cyprus that took the initiative to volunteer firemen, in a gesture of solidarity with Greece.

The firemen and mobile units were transported to Greece on board C130 military transport planes.

Sophocleous said he was in contact with Cyprus` Ambassador in Athens George Georgis, who informed him that the firemen and units were ``in Aliveri of Euboea, which is one of the areas facing the worst fires at the moment.``

On their arrival in Greece, the firemen ``placed themselves at the disposal of the services and guidance of the Greek fire department,`` he added.

    [02] PAPADOPOULOS - GREECE FIRES

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has sent a message to Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, expressing deep sorrow for the tragedy that has hit Greece due to fires, noting that Cypriot Hellenism is participating in the mourning of the people of Greece.

``On behalf of the Government of Cyprus, the people of Cyprus and myself personally, I express our deepest sorrow for the tragedy that has hit Greece, due to the fires. We express our condolences for the dead and the great destruction,`` the President says.

He adds that ``at this dramatic time, the Hellenism of Cyprus is participating in the deep mourning of the fraternal people of Greece and expresses its wholehearted support.``

    [03] CHRISTOFIAS - US STANCE

House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias appeared reserved on Sunday regarding a possible turn in the US stance on the Cyprus problem, in the light of recent remarks by Undersecretary of State at the US State Department Nicholas Burns and US Ambassador in Nicosia Ronald Schlicher.

Asked if he saw any shift in the US stance, Christofias said he hoped there would be a change, which would be welcome.

``Life itself verifies declarations in practice,`` he pointed out, noting that ``the people of Cyprus, due to the experiences it has, is always rather skeptical when it sees and hears remarks of this king, especially prior to elections.``
