[01] TZIONIS - PERTEV - MEETINGSenior aides to the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot community meet on Tuesday to discuss arrangements for a forthcoming meeting between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.According to diplomatic sources, the Greek Cypriot side is adamant that Tuesday`s meeting between the Director of Papadopoulos Diplomatic Office Tasos Tzionis and Talats adviser Rashit Pertev is held with a view to implement a UN-brokered agreement in July last year, reached between the two leaders. In early July, President Papadopoulos, in a letter inviting Talat to a meeting, also proposed practical steps to implement the agreement. Tzionis and Pertev will meet at 1100 local time (0800 GMT) at the UN headquarters in Nicosia, in the presence of UNFICYP senior adviser Wlodzimierz Cibor to set a date for the meeting of the two leaders. Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, Michael Moller, who usually attends meetings between Tzionis and Pertev is overseas. Tuesdays meeting, the same sources point out, should push forward for the implementation of the July 8 agreement, bearing also in mind a recent appeal by the UN Security Council to put into force the agreement. The Greek Cypriot side is said to be ready for a meeting between Papadopoulos and Talat the soonest possible, the same sources added. President Tassos Papadopoulos and Mehmet Ali Talat agreed on 8 July 2006, during a meeting in Nicosia in the presence of UN official Ibrahim Gambari, to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. Following the agreement, the representatives of the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities began meetings in the UN-controlled buffer zone to work out the modalities for the implementation of the July agreement. The two have held around 40 meetings but no progress has been achieved. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. [02] CYPRUS - AIR SPACE - PROTESTCyprus has protested to the UN new violations of its airspace and of FIR (Flight Information Region) Nicosia by Turkish fighter jets. An official statement has said that in a letter to the UN Secretary General, dated 9 August, Charge D Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the UN, Andreas Hadjichrysanthou drew attention to the violations of international air traffic regulations and the national airspace of Cyprus by military aircraft of the Turkish Air Force recorded from 6 June to 31 July 2007.In his letter, Hadjichrysanthou strongly protested the violations and appealed for their immediate cessation, noting that Turkeys policy of non-observance of established rules and regulations governing international aviation gravely jeopardises flight safety in the Eastern Mediterranean. These provocative and irresponsible actions by Turkey, in conjunction with the recently pursued Turkish policy of regional hegemony, which covets the maritime resources of the Republic of Cyprus, present a serious destabilizing factor and generate tension in the region, the Cypriot diplomat said. Furthermore, such policies and actions provide ample demonstration of the irresponsible behaviour of a country that otherwise aspires to assume a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, Hadjichrysanthou added. [03] POMAK PRESIDENT - CONGRESSPresident of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) Charis Sophoclides believes that this year`s POMAK congress is perhaps the most important of recent years, as it coincides with a transitional period for the Cyprus problem. In an interview with CNA London correspondent Kyriacos Trioupras, Sophoclides points out that this period is transitional in that the meeting of President Tassos Papadopoulos with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat may pave the way for preconditions towards a Cyprus settlement. Sophoclides also makes an assessment of POMAK`s role in the enlightenment effort regarding the Cyprus problem, saying it is satisfactory, adding that more could be done to solve the problems of overseas Cypriots. Sophoclides said this year congress would give overseas Cypriots the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues. Regarding the fact that the congress is held in a pre-election period leading to the February 2008 presidential elections, Sophoclides said this gave additional significance to the congress but pointed out that POMAK always follows the policy of the democratically elected government. [04] EXCAVATIONS - BRONZE AGEArchaeological investigations in Cyprus during summer 2007 featured renewed excavations at the Bronze Age community of Politiko-Troullia, lying about 25 km southwest of Nicosia in the copper-bearing foothills of the Troodos Mountains, and brought to light a series of households that produced evidence of intensive animal husbandry and crop processing, copper or bronze metallurgy and sophisticated ceramic technology during the Middle Bronze Age, just prior to the advent of cities on Late Bronze Age Cyprus. The results from Politiko-Troullia open an archaeological window on the communities that provided the foundation for urbanized civilization on Cyprus. Under permit from the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus and the direction of Dr. Steven Falconer and Dr. Patricia Fall of Arizona State University, this fieldwork revealed extensive evidence of the Bronze Age community (ca. 2000 B.C.) that was the predecessor of ancient Tamassos, the seat of a centrally important kingdom during the subsequent Iron Age. The excavations involved graduate and undergraduate students from Cyprus, Canada, Australia and the United States. Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
