  • [01] TURKISH INVASION - 33 YEARS AFTER

July 20, 2007, marks 33 years since the Turkish invasion and subsequent occupation of Cyprus` northern third, the consequence of which are still felt across the island.

Today, Cyprus pays tribute to those killed during the invasion and those still missing, with memorials and other events in the government-controlled areas of the Republic.

Air-raid sirens wailed today at 0530 local time (0230 GMT), when the Turkish invasion began 33 years ago with the landing of Turkish troops on the island`s northern shores.

At 0830 local time a memorial service for the army officers and soldiers killed during the invasion took place at Makedonitissa Tomb in Nicosia, in the presence of Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, other officials and a delegation of the Greek government and parliament.

An official memorial ceremony followed at Faneromeni Church in Nicosia in the presence of President Papadopoulos. Defence Minister Christodoulos Pasiardis gave the eulogy.

Gatherings to protest the Turkish invasion were organised by Cypriot overseas organisations in various towns abroad, including Athens, London and Washington.

    [02] NICOLAS BURNS - CYPRUS

US Undersecretary at the State Department Nicholas Burns has expressed hope that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will undertake a renewed effort to achieve a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem, adding that the United States will support such effort.

Burns told CNA that ``it is important for the people of Cyprus to understand that we havent forgotten about the imperative of making a peace on Cyprus, a final peace, and we want to see that happening, so we hope that the Secretary General of the UN will support a renewed effort by the UN to launch negotiations.``

Replying to questions, Burns noted he did not mean the 8 July 2006 agreement and said ``we hope that the Secretary General of the United Nations will undertake a renewed effort to achieve a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus dispute, and the United States will support such effort.``

    [03] USA - FRANK PALLONE

US Congressman Frank Pallone, a member of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, has urged all his colleagues to join him in ``pressuring the US administration to return to a policy that once again takes into consideration that entire 33 year history of the Cyprus conflict,`` noting that ``the people of Cyprus deserve nothing less.``

During his floor speech at the House to recognise the 33rd anniversary of Turkey`s illegal invasion of Cyprus, the New Jersey Congressman voiced concern over the Bush administration`s drastic shift in policy towards Cyprus and Turkey.

    [04] TENNIS: CYPRUS-BULGARIA
