  • [01] SECURITY COUNCIL- MOLLER - CYPRUS PROBLEM

UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller briefed the representatives of the Security Council Member States on Cyprus, ahead of the renewal of the UNFICYP`s mandate in Cyprus on June 15.

However, according to CNA sources, Moller`s briefing on the developments in the July 8 Agreement, was in a neutral manner, without attributing to any side the responsibility for the current impasse in the efforts to implement the agreement.

The same sources told CNA that there will be no surprises in the resolution for the renwal of UNFICYP mandate to be approved by the coming Thursday, while the permanent members of the SC are willing to conclude the draft resolution during the unofficial consultations late tonight and tomorrow.

During yesterday`s meeting some of the SC members said that a revision of UNFICYP may be necessary after some months in case of continued lack of progress in the Cyprus problem.

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed on 8 July 2006, during a meeting in Nicosia to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

[02] EAC CHAIRMAN - UNIONS 24 HOUR STRIKE

The board of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus decided to wait for the final document of the Council of Ministers decision on the introduction of natural gas to Cyprus, before taking final decisions on the issue.

At the same time, the board decided to call on the EACs unions to suspend strike action announced earlier Friday for next week.

In statements to CNA, EAC chairman Charilaos Stavrakis said the board decided to wait for the final document of the Cabinet over the natural gas issue before taking official and final decisions, adding the document should be available by Monday or Tuesday.

Regarding the 24-hour strike announced for next Wednesday by the EAC unions to protest the Cabinet decision on natural gas, Stavrakis said the board is appealing to the unions to suspend their strike action because problems are not solved with strike action but with bona fide discussion with all interested parties.

    [03] GSSE - CYPRUS - GOLD MEDALS

Cyprus secured three more gold medals in the penultimate competition day of the 2007 Games of Small States of Europe, hosted by Monaco.

Cypriot athletes clinched two gold medals in swimming and one in table tennis, increasing Cyprus` gold medals to 23. Cyprus trails Island in the medal list which has 29 gold medals.
