  • [01] GREEK FM - ANNIVERSARY OF CYPRUS` ACCESSION TO THE EU

Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis has assured that Greece is in deliberations and has close cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus, making efforts for the undertaking of a fresh, well prepared effort to solve the Cyprus problem, based on the relevant Security Council decisions, the principles and values of the European Union and the acquis communautaire.

In a statement at CNA on the occasion of the third anniversary of Cyprus accession to the EU, Bakoyiannis said that since May 1st, 2004, Cyprus has been exercising its policy and promoting its goals in the framework of the EU and is recognised by the EU as a valuable partner, which contributes constructively to the formation of European policies.

On May 1st, three years are fulfilled since Cyprus accession to the European family. It is with great pleasure that we hail this anniversary, since it marks the fulfillment of three years since the achievement of a major political goal, both of the Republic of Cyprus and of Greece, she stressed.

Bakoyiannis noted that Cyprus accession has been a historic success, above all of the Cyprus people, who believed wholeheartedly in this goal and worked for its success, along with the Cyprus government.

It also constitutes a success for all the political forces of Cyprus and Greece that cooperated closely for the promotion and the fulfillment of accession, she added.

Since May 1st, 2004, Cyprus is exercising its policy and promotes its goals within the EU framework. It participates on an equal footing to the European mechanism for taking decisions and will soon enter the Eurozone. It is recognized by Europeans as a valuable partner, which contributes constructively to the formation of European policies. As a partner who supports the European vision and actively promotes the unifying venture, she added.

Bakoyiannis underlined that Cyprus accession to the EU also constitutes a milestone in the course for a Cyprus settlement and the reunification of the island, which maintains a primary goal of the Government of Cyprus and Greece, adding that accession has created for three years now a new reality, which cannot be ignored to any new effort for a settlement.

She reiterated that our primary goal continues to be to reach a just, viable and functional settlement that will lead to the reunification of Cyprus, so that all of its inhabitants, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, will be in a position to benefit from the fruits of accession to the European Union.

[02] PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS - NEW POLICE CHIEF AND DEPUTY CHIEF

Iacovos Papacostas has been appointed new Cyprus Police Chief, taking over from Charalambos Koulentis who is retiring while Michalakis Papageorgiou was appointed new Deputy Chief, in succession of Papacostas.

Speaking at a ceremony, during which he appointed Papacostas and Papageorgiou, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said the two were the most suitable candidates for the promotion due to their experience and abilities.

He said that these abilities and the fact that the new Chief of Police and Deputy Chief are already members of the Police, are fundamental preconditions and prerequisites for the effective fulfillment of the task they undertake.

As regards the outgoing Chief of Police Charalambos Koulentis, Papadopopoulos praised his work, noting that he fulfilled his duties with dedication and eagerness, effectively and impartially.
