  • [01] GAMBARI - CYPRUS QUESTION - TOUR

UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari has described as ``important`` Monday`s meeting between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, on the issue of missing persons.

According to diplomatic sources, Gambari outlined this view during informal consultations on Tuesday at the UN Security Council about his forthcoming visit to Ankara, Athens and Nicosia, July 2-9.

The same sources have said that Gambari had described his mission as a fact finding mission. After his return to the UN seat, he will brief UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the Security Council on the prospects of reviving Annan`s good offices mission and to resume negotiations on the question of Cyprus.

Several members of the Security Council took the floor during the informal consulations and expressed their support for the visit.

A written statement by the Secretary General`s spokesman said Gambari will be traveling to Cyprus, Greece and Turkey at the beginning of July to assess the political situation in and around Cyprus and to evaluate the prospects for a resumption of political talks aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement.

``Gambari`s mission will be undertaken within the framework of the Secretary General`s good offices,`` the statement added.

Furthermore it noted that Gambari plans to hold meetings with officials in Ankara and Athens from 3 to 5 July and be on the island of Cyprus from 6 to 9 July.

``While in Cyprus, Gambari plans to meet with both H.E. Mr. Tassos Papadopoulos and H.E. Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat. He will then return to New York to brief the Secretary-General on the results of his mission,`` the statement concluded.

[02] CYPRIOT FM - CYPRUS PROBLEM - TECHNICAL COMMITTEES

The Cyprus governments position on the discussion of core issues of the Cyprus question with a parallel discussion on everyday issues at the technical committees is final and irrevocable, Cypriot Foreign Minister George Lillikas has said.

Responding to questions after a meeting with US Ambassador in Nicosia Ronald Schlicher and invited to comment information that the US favors the beginning of discussions on everyday issues, the FM said: Firstly we are interested in what we have agreed with the UN SG, that is to discuss issues that will be included in any solution plan of the Cyprus problem, with a view to minimize the differences, or to prepare the common ground, or to collect elements that will be mutually accepted by both communities, so as to make it easier for the SG to move on to a new initiative for negotiations.

He noted that ``we are willing in parallel with this process to discuss everyday issues, in which the Turkish Cypriots are interested, adding that if the T/Cs and Turkey change their stance they will do so from the beginning.

[03] MERIYE OTTOMAN BATHS - EUROPA NOSTRA AWARD

The 16th century Omeriye Ottoman Baths in Nicosia have been awarded the prize for the Conservation of Architectural Heritage, within the framework of the annual European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards.

The prize was presented Tuesday in Madrid to 34 laureates from 22 countries. Nicosia Mayor Michalakis Zambelas received the award from Queen Sofia of Spain, during the European Heritage Awards Ceremony at the Palacio Real del El Pardo.

Zambelas told CNA that on November 20, 2006 the plaque of the award will be placed at the entrance of the Baths by Europa Nostra officials, who will then tour the site.

Zambelas also said that he had a brief private conversation with Queen Sofia, who expressed a wish to visit Cyprus and satisfaction that a Nicosia monument has been awarded a Europa Nostra prize.
