    Popular Bank records a 63,2% profit rise for first half of 2005

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA)-- Popular Bank said the financial results of the Group for the first six months of 2005 are particularly satisfactory. The profit before provisions increased by 20,7% reaching CYP45,1m. whereas the profit after provisions rose to CYP22,4m. having surged by 56,5% compared to the same period last year.

    According to the financial results for the first half of 2005, announced by Popular Bank Group, the profit attributable to the shareholders rose to CYP18,1m. compared to CYP11,1m. in the first six months of 2004, an increase of 63,2%.

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) ---- The Republic of Cyprus believes that a declaration, expected to be issued by the European Union's Foreign Ministers this week in response to Turkey's unilateral statement that it does not recognize Cyprus, should safeguard the Republic's interests and ''put things in their right dimension,'' Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou said today.

    In statements to CNA from Vienna, where he met with his Austrian counterpart Ursula Plassnik, Iacovou said that the EU countries understand the Cypriot government's positions, regarding the text of the declaration that will be discussed and finalized this week in Newport, Wales, during the informal EU Foreign Affairs Ministers meeting.

    CNA Director leaves after appointment to EU post

    Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA)--- The Cyprus News Agency Board of Directors organized today a farewell reception in honour of CNA Director Themis Themistocleous, who leaves the Agency tomorrow, after accepting a post as Head of the European Commission's Representation in Nicosia.

    Chairman of the Board Aristos Aristotelous praised Themistocleous' six years work at the Agency and said that he is now undertaking a new and very important post, which is an honor for the Agency itself.
