    Flags at half-mast in Cyprus on Pope's funeral

    Nicosia, Apr 7 (CNA) -- Flags at government buildings will fly at half-mast on Friday, the day of the funeral of Pope John Paul II, it was officially announced here today.

    President Tassos Papadopoulos will represent Cyprus at the funeral. He leaves tonight for Athens from where tomorrow morning he will travel to Rome together with Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulia.

    The Orthodox Church of Cyprus will be represented to the funeral by the acting primate of the Holy Synod, Paphos Bishop Chrysostomos, and Bishops Triminthountos Vasilios and Kykkou Nikiforos.

    Friday and Saturday: 08/04/2005 to 09/04/2005

    Polonged clear periods with some high cloud. Winds mainly from northeast fresh and state of sea moderate. Temperatures ranging from 10 to 23 inland and from 11 to 22 on the coast.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 10/04/2005 to 11/04/2005

    Fine with light to fresh northwesterly winds. Temperature rising.

    European Greens to visit Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 7 (CNA) -- A delegation of the Green Group in the European Parliament, headed by Chairman of the EU - Turkey Parliamentary Committee Joost Lagendijk, arrives this evening in Cyprus, at an invitation of the Cyprus Ecologists and Environmentalist Movement.

    Tomorrow, the delegation will be received by House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias and is due to meet with EU Commission Representative to Cyprus Andrian van der Meer.

    On Saturday, the delegation will cross into the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus to have meetings with Turkish Cypriot politicians Mehmet Ali Talat, Serdar Denktash, Dervis Eroglou and president of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce Ali Erel.

    Turkey responsible for human rights violations, Court confirms

    Nicosia, Apr 7 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has described as ''very important'' a European Court of Human Rights decision to declare admissible a case against Turkey, relating to Greek Cypriot property claims in Turkish occupied Cyprus.

    Chrysostomides said that the decision reaffirmed that Turkey is considered responsible for human rights violations in the occupied areas and that a ''compensation commission'', set up in the occupied north to deal with Greek Cypriot property claims, is not an effective domestic remedy that has to be exhausted before any applications are filed to the Strasbourg Court.

    Motion on Cyprus problem approved unanimously by EFJ

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) A motion proposed by the Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) about the situation in Cyprus was approved unanimously by the Annual Meeting of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), held in Bilbao on April 3-4, 2005.

    According to a press release by the UCJ the motion approved, expresses profound concern over the continuous obstacles, imposed by the Turkish Cypriot administration and the Turkish army, for free access of journalists to all information sources in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus.

    UCJ expresses concern over US role in attacks on journalists in Iraq

    Nicosia, Apr 7 (CNA)-- Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) President Andreas Kannaouros expressed concern over the role of the United States over the killing of journalists and media staff in Iraq.

    Kannaouros' concern was expressed in a letter to US Ambassador to Cyprus Michael Klosson on the occasion of the second anniversary of the attack by United States forces on Baghdads Palestine Hotel, which led to the deaths of two journalists, while during a US attack on the Al-Jazeera offices in Baghdad the same day another reporter was killed.

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has sent a message of condolences to Prince Albert II of Monaco, on the death of his father Prince Rainier III.

    �On behalf of the Cyprus people, the government and myself, I express to you and to the Grimaldi family, my most sincere condolences on the death of Prince Rainier III , who marked the life and the history of the principality of Monaco'', the President notes in his message.

    Cyprus government rejects T/C allegations on Zodia crossing point

    Nicosia, Mar 7 (CNA) The Cyprus government has strongly rejected allegations by the so called prime minister of the Turkish occupied north as regards the opening of a crossing point at Zodia, following the route of the old Nicosia-Morphou road.
