Government sets up Committees to oversee Green Line Regulation

Nicosia, May 8 (CNA) -- The government has announced its decision to set up a Monitoring Group and two Technical Committees as part of its stated policy to monitor and effectively implement a European Union regulation on intra-island trade.

The Group, to be coordinated by the President's Diplomatic Office, will comprise senior officials from the ministries of Agriculture, Justice, Foreign Affairs and the Law Office of the Republic. It will advise and give guidance to the Technical Committees as well as conduct consultations with the Commission and the authorities of the British Bases on the island to ensure the best possible implementation of the regulation.

The Green Line Regulation, adopted by the EU last week, sets out special rules for the crossing of goods, persons and services as of May 1, when Cyprus joined the EU.

Papadopoulos: o referendum without improvements to UN plan

Larnaca, May 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said here today that there can be no second referendum on a UN plan for a solution unless negotiations take place and improvements are introduced to the existing document.

He said that his government has drafted a strategy on how to handle the situation, following the rejection of the Annan plan by the overwhelming majority of the Greek Cypriots (76 per cent). Turkish Cypriots approved the plan by 65 per cent.
