    Irish Premier visits Cyprus to discuss presidency programme

    Larnaca, Nov 6 (CNA) -- Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, heading a multi-party delegation, arrived here late last night for talks with President Tassos Papadopoulos on the programme of the forthcoming EU presidency Dublin will assume in January next year.

    In brief statements on arrival, he said he would discuss all the issues and listen carefully to what the Cypriot President has to say.

    US backs Commission's language on Cyprus in Turkey's paper

    Washington, Nov 6 (CNA) -- US State Department's Deputy Spokesman Adam Ereli has expressed Washington's support over the content of the European Commissions strategy paper on Turkey that says a Cyprus settlement on the basis of the Annan plan should be found by 1 May 2004.

    In statements here Wednesday after the European Commission published the reports, Ereli noted this has been the US position for a long time.

    Cyprus Parliament discusses EU draft Constitution

    Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) -- The Plenary of the Cyprus House of Representatives holds here today a special session to discuss the draft Constitution of the European Union prepared by the European Convention on the Future of Europe.

    At his opening statement House President Demetris Christofias said that today's session is the result of the work the Parliament has prepared for the efforts to create the Constitutional Treaty.

    The representatives of the Cyprus people must have a say and a role in European Union's affairs, he said.

    Leader of the Turkish Cypriot Patriotic Unity Movement Alpay Durduran and Turkish Cypriot journalists watched the parliamentary proceedings.

    The Report of the Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs was read after the House President's opening remarks.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 07/11/2003 to 08/11/2003

    The weather on Friday will be mainly cloudy with rain and isolated thunderstorms Southeasterly to southwesterly moderate winds, 3 to 4 BF will prevail, but in the area of the thunderstorms they will be variable, fresh, 4 to 5 BF. The sea state will be slight and locally moderate.

    Temperature will range from 12C to 23 C inland, from 14C to 23C over coastal areas form 10C to 14C over mountains.

    On Saturday, the weather will be partly cloudy with occasional showers. The winds will be southwesterly to northwesterly light to moderate, 3 to 4 BF. The sea state will be slight and locally moderate.

    Temperature will note a decrease of around 2C.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 09/11/2003 to 10/11/2003 ------------------------------------------------------- Unstable weather conditions will predominate on Sunday and Monday, with patchy cloud and isolated showers. The temperature will decrease further more, especially on Monday.

    Irish PM: more determined effort needed for Cyprus settlement

    Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) -- Ireland's Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has called for a ''more determined effort'' to help find a negotiated settlement in Cyprus to allow a united country to join the European Union.

    Ahern, whose country assumed the EU presidency in January, commended President Tassos Papadopoulos for the successful progress Cyprus has made in its bid to join the Union and described a Commission report on Cyprus ''very important achievement''.

    Speaking after talks here today with Papadopoulos, he said a UN peace proposal on a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus is the way to ''unlock the difficulties'' on the island and make headway towards a settlement.

    Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Defence Minister Kyriakos Mavronikolas has called on Ankara to realise that its accession to the European Union passes through a political settlement in Cyprus.

    His comments come in the wake of an EU warning to Turkey that the absence of a solution in Cyprus could become a ''serious obstacle'' in Ankara's European aspirations.

    Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) Cyprus House of Representatives began a debate here Thursday on the draft treaty for the new EU Constitution, stressing that this signals Cyprus involvement in the future of Europe.

    UCJ calls for end to campaign against T/C journalists

    Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) -- The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) strongly protested over the continuing and intensified persecution of Turkish Cypriot journalists in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus.

    In a statement the unions executive committee said during the last days five prominent Turkish Cypriot Journalists were charged by the occupation authorities for insulting and undermining the commandership of the Turkish army and the so-called Turkish Republic of North Cyprus and will be tried in the military courts where the prosecutor is asking up to 21 years imprisonment for each one.

    Nicosia, Nov 6 (CNA) Cyprus Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou told the 113th session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe meeting in Chisinau, Moldavia that Cyprus expects the CoE to put an effective end to the contempt which some countries show for the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
