The protest is included in a letter dated 10 October from Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the United Nations Andreas Mavroyianis addressed to the UN Secretary-General. The letter will be circulated as a document of the General Assembly and teh Security Council. The Cyprus government drew the UN chief's attention "to new violations of the flight information region (FIR) of Nicosia and the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus by military aircraft of the Turkish Air Force recorded on 25, 27 and 28 August; on 4, 18 and 23 September; and on 6 and 7 October 2003." The ambassador said in his letter "on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, I strongly protest all the above-mentioned violations of the Nicosia FIR and the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus, which are contrary to international law as well as to Security Council resolutions on Cyprus. We sincerely hope that the Government of Turkey, taking into consideration its international obligations, will refrain from further violations, respect the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus and contribute substantively to the efforts for a just and functional solution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of United Nations resolutions," the Cypriot diplomat added. In a speech on Tuesday on the issue International Convention against the Reproductive Cloning of Human Beings, Jacovides reminded that Cyprus has adopted binding legislation at a national level, implementing the 1998 First Additional Protocol to the European Convention on Biomedicine, which prohibits the cloning of human beings for reproductive purposes. Asked if the US diplomat is bringing anything different from Ankara, Iacovou said I do not think he has different impressions but his contacts allow him to offer different interpretations from the ones others have conveyed to us.
