    United Nations, Feb 20 (CNA) -- UN Deputy spokeswoman Hua Jiang said here yesterday the UN Secretary - General's Special Advisor on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto held Wednesday lengthy consultations with Cyprus president-elect Tassos Papadopoulos.

    Australian envoy: difficult to meet deadline for Cyprus solution

    Nicosia, Feb 20 (CNA) -- Australia's special representative for Cyprus Jim Short has described the next few days critically important and said it would be difficult to reach a negotiated settlement by the end of this month, as is the wish of the UN.

    Speaking after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, Short said there are still important issues to be sorted out and added that depending on the outcome of discussions taking place, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan may decide to put forward a new peace plan.

    Nicosia, Feb 20 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 21/2/2003 to 22/02/2003 -------------------- On Friday the weather will be cloudy at times with local showers, perhaps isolated thunderstorms and snowfalls over the mountains. The wind will be west to Northwest 4-5BF and the sea will be moderate to rough. The temperature will reach the 12C inland, 15C on the coast and zero over the mountains.

    On Saturday the weather will improve. Risk of isolated showers in the afternoon. The wind will be Northwest to North, moderate 4BF. The temperature will decrease by 1-2C.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 22/2/2003 to 23/2/2003 ------------------------------ Cloudy at times with showers and snowfalls over the mountain. On Monday the snowfalls are expected above 1500FT. The temperature wil note further decrease.

    1540:CYPPRESS:08 Cyprus seeks improvement of its fleet Nicosia, Feb 20 (CNA) The aim of the Merchant Shipping department is the continued improvement of the Cyprus fleet, with an aim to attract improved quality ships, the director of the department told CNA.

    Sergios Sergiou said the islands future accession to the European Union has significantly improved the climate and perception against the Cyprus flag, commenting on the Seafarers International Research Flag State Audit 2003 of the Cardiff University School of Social Sciences.

    The Flag State Audit ranks Cyprus among the countries with a good regulatory capacity.

    According to the latest figures, the Cyprus merchant fleet ranks sixth worldwide, numbering 2,202 ships with gross tonnage of 24.8 million.

    Government lends newspaper volumes to Museum

    Nicosia, Feb 20 (CNA) - Over one thousand volumes of Cypriot newspapers, published since the island's independence in 1960, will be loaned by the Republic's Press and Information Office (PIO) to the Museum of Typography and History of Cyprus Press of the Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ).

    An agreement to this effect was signed today by Minister of the Interior Andreas Panayiotou and UCJ President Andreas Kannaouros.

    1740:CYPPRESS:10 Cyprus labour market exhibits good performance By Nicos Bellos Brussels, Feb 20 (CNA) Cyprus has one of the best performances regarding the labour market, among European Union acceding countries and EU member states, said a report of the European Commission entitled Progress in the implementation of the Joint Assessment papers on employment policies in candidate countries.

    The report, which was presented in Brussels today by Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner, Anna Diamantopoulou, said acceding countries have made progress but it is clear that there are significant differences among them.

    It also considers urgent the need to increase the percentage of employment, especially in the services sector, to reduce the reliance on agriculture and traditional sectors and to improve qualifications.

    According to the report, Cyprus ranks first in employment, with 67.9% and unemployment reaching 4% in the year 2001, and the lowest percentage of unemployment 8.4% among people aged 25 and under.
