    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 19 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    On Friday (20.9.2002) and Saturday (21.9.2002), the weather will be mainly fine with patchy clouds.

    Winds will be southwesterly to northwesterly, gentle to moderate during the day, and northwesterly, light to gentle during the night, over slight seas.

    Temperatures will range from 19 to 32 degrees Celsius inland and along the south and east coasts, and from 19 to 29 degrees along the west coast.

    On Sunday (22.9.2002) and Monday (23.9.2002), as small increase in temperatures is expected.

    London, Sep 19 (CNA) -- Campaigners fighting construction of a disputed huge antenna by the British at their base at Akrotiri Salt Lake, in southern Cyprus, have won the backing of the British Green Party.

    At its National Conference the Green Party adopted an emergency motion proposed by London MEP Jean Lambert and actor Peter Polycarpou calling for "an immediate halt building work and destruction and removal of wildlife from the Akrotiri wetland, a protected wildlife habitat and proposed nature reserve".

    Talks on SBAs are on the right track, says British official

    London, Sep 19 (CNA) -- Britain believes that talks regarding the implementation of the acquis communautaire in the areas of the British Bases after Cyprus' accession to the European Union "can be taken to a satisfactory close before the Copenhagen Summit."

    A Foreign Office official spokesman told CNA that "the talks on the Sovereign Bases are going very well and the British side is pleased with the progress made."

    The spokesperson stated that the participants in the talks make efforts to ensure that the residents in the SBAs will have the same rights vis-a-vis the European Union as the rest of the population of Cyprus.

    UN-led direct talks continue

    Nicosia, Sep 19 (CNA) - UN-led direct talks on the Cyprus problem will continue with the discussion of the territorial issue, as talks on the executive and legal authority of a central state were completed here today.

    CNA has learned that the territorial issue will be discussed during the next two meetings left before President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash meet UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in New York on October 3 and 4.

    United Nations, Sep 19 (CNA) - Cyprus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides and US Undersecretary for Political Affairs Mark Grossman, yesterday exchanged in New York the instruments of ratification of the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Treaty between Cyprus and the US.

    With the exchange of the ratification instruments, the Treaty, signed on 20 December 1999, comes into force and compliments the 1999 Extradition Treaty.
