    London, Aug 16 (CNA) -- The UK Green Party has condemned the British government's bid to install a 100-metre-high antenna at Akrotiri Salt Lake, on Cyprus' southern coast.

    United Nations, Aug 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus has appealed to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to exercise his influence upon Turkey in order to put pressure on Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to immediately release two Turkish Cypriot journalists jailed in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.

    Cypriot teams in UEFA Cup

    Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus' cup winners, Anorthosis, a refugee football club from the Turkish-occupied Famagusta town, beat Grevennacher of Luxembourg 3-0 at GSP stadium in Nicosia last night. It was the first leg of the UEFA qualifying round.

    Anorthosis' scorers were Marius Pierkarsky in the 21st minute, Wojeck Kowascyk in the 43rd minute and Panicos Xiourouppas in the 79th minute through a penalty kick.

    In Budapest, Cyprus' runners up AEL of Limassol defeated 4-0 by Ferencvaros, in the first leg of the UEFA qualifying round.

    Attila Tokoli scored twice for the Hungarian side in the 10th and 11th minutes. Zoltan Gera scored in the 55th and Igor Szkukalek in the 58th minute.

    United Nations, Aug 16 (CNA) -- Cyprus has signed the protocol against the illicit manufacturing and trafficking in firearms, their parts and components and ammunition, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime.

    Police on full alert for fear of illegal immigrants

    Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) -- Four patrol boats, belonging to Cyprus' coastal police, have been scouring the seas on a 24-hour basis in a bid to prevent the entry into Cyprus of illegal immigrants, assistant unit commander of the coastal police, chief inspector George Frangos has said.

    Morphou people appeal to Europe, UN for help

    Nicosia, Aug 16 (CNA) -- Eight refugee organisations, led by Morphou municipality, have called on Europe and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council to act more decisively in the direction of Turkey so that it works towards a just solution in Cyprus.

    "The present situation is totally unacceptable, it is a disgrace to humanity," a resolution said, which asked for support in the quest for "peace, justice and the unification of Cyprus."

    The resolution, handed to the embassies of these countries, said the people of Morphou believe that "Europe and the governments of the US, Russia, China, France and Britain, as permanent members of the Security Council, can exert more pressure upon Turkey to change attitude and work towards a just solution to the Cyprus problem."

    Restoration of the fundamental human rights for all Cypriots, respect for international law and order, the ascertainment of the fate of missing persons and the withdrawal of Turkish troops must be part of a just and viable settlement, the resolution stressed.

    London, Aug 16 (CNA) -- British Undersecretary of State for Education Stephen Twigg has said London supports the establishment of a bizonal, bicommunal federation in Cyprus.

    He also said that if the current UN peace effort does not bear fruit, fresh attempts must be made among European Union members or in conjunction with the US.
