Cyprus Airways proposes less state ownership

Nicosia, Jun 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus Airways Chairman Haris Loizides has suggested that the state should reduce its participation in the company immediately to 51 per cent to help the airline meet increasing competition and the demands of liberalisation.

Addressing the Cyprus Airways Annual General Meeting (AGM), he said pre tax profits for 2001 fell to 4,1 million Cyprus pounds compared with 5,6 m. the year before, a result he described as "satisfactory" bearing in mind the blow airlines around the world were dealt in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US. (One Cyprus pound trades at about 1,5 US dollars)

He said that total revenue for the group of Cyprus Airways companies, except the Duty Free shops, recorded an increase of 10 per cent and reached 178,3 m. compared with 162,0 m. in 2000.
