    Nicosia, Jun 10 (CN�) -- Cyprus will close today in Luxembourg one more chapter in its accession negotiations with the European Union, that of Competition, bringing up the number of closed chapters to 28 out of 31.

    Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus Chief Negotiator with the EU George Vassiliou has said that during his recent meetings in Germany with government and parliamentary officials he ascertained the general feeling that Cyprus remains the front-runner among the EU candidate countries.

    Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro De Soto had a short meeting in Rome last night to discuss developments in the UN-led direct talks, held since mid January this year, in Nicosia, between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    Cyprus to host EU ministerial conference on education

    Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus has been chosen to play host to the 7th Conference of the Education Ministers of the EU member states and the applicant countries.

    The Conference will take place at the end of June 2003, within the framework of the EU Greek presidency and will mainly address the Mediterranean dimension of the European education.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    On Tuesday, June 11, the weather will be mainly fine with patchy clouds at first becoming partly cloudy during midday with isolated showers. Winds will be southwesterly, moderate to fresh, becoming gentle northwesterly. Seas will be moderate during the day and slight overnight. Temperatures will range from 22 to 35 degrees Celsius inland and from 22 to 33 degrees Celsius along the coast.

    On Wednesday, June 12, the weather will be mainly fine with patchy clouds. Winds will be moderate southwesterly to gentle northwesterly. Seas will be slight to moderate, with no change in temperatures.

    The weather on Thursday, June 13, and Friday, June 14, will be mostly fine, with no change in temperatures.

    Defence Minister: Turkey tries to create atmosphere of tension

    Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos has said the National Guard's early warning system is monitoring activity in the area, because of Turkish military manoeuvres in the region for which Ankara, illegally and unilaterally, is using parts of Nicosia FIR for the week-long air and sea exercises.

    Nicosia, Jun 10 (CNA) -- There are no adverse repercussions on the environment from a now defunct mine, in an area on the northwestern coast of Cyprus, near the Turkish occupied part of the island, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment, Costas Themistocleous, has said.
