Turkish FM sticks to intransigent stance on Cyprus

    by Maria Myles

New York, Nov 13 (CNA) -- Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem appeared unyielding before the UN General Assembly here yersterday with regard to his positions on the Cyprus question, reiterating the long standing views about the so-called realities on the island.

He told the Assembly that common ground is necessary if any new initiative on Cyprus is to succeed, whereas the UN itself has already said that there is sufficient common ground to continue with the peace negotiations, which the Turkish side has abandoned.

Cypriot FM: All efforts for Cyprus talks should be directed to Turkey

    by Maria Myles

New York, Nov 13 (CNA) -- All efforts to resume the UN-led stalled peace negotiations, by the UN and other interested parties, must and should be directed towards Turkey, Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has said, pointing out that nobody is asking anything of the Greek Cypriot side with regard to this objective.

The minister said he does not think there would be a resumption of talks within this year and warned that the window of opportunity for a settlement is going to close this time next year.

    Cyprus refutes Turkish claims

    by Maria Myles

New York, Nov 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Government Spokesman has refuted claims by the Turkish Foreign Minister that President Glafcos Clerides has rejected an invitation by the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community to meet and pointed out that Clerides does not accept "tricks" which would do away with the UN peace process.

Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou called on Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to say "yes" to an invitation to talks by the UN Secretary General, noting that Denktash's negative response was tantamount to a rejection of the UN peace process. CNA/MM/GP/2001

Cyprus journalists condemn attack against T/C daily

Nicosia, Nov 13 (CNA) -- The Union of Cyprus Journalists has denounced the new "piratical attack" of the self-styled regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus against Turkish Cypriot newspaper "Avrupa", saying that such action constitutes the culmination of a new cycle of threats and blackmails against the newspaper.

A statement released today, the Union of Cyprus Journalists points out that "with a gangster-like assault" the occupation forces have confiscated the technical equipment and other assets of "'Avrupa' on the pretext that it did not carry out its tax obligations."

The Union adds that such threats aim "at strangulating the newspaper and silencing its daily voice against the partitionist and expansionist policies of the Ankara rulers and the oppressive Denktash regime and in favour of the freedom of expression and the human rights in the Turkish Cypriot community."
