[01] President Clerides - Statements - Departure for New York

Larnaca, Sep 10 (CNA) -- In response to a UN invitation to talks, President Glafcos Clerides left for New York today saying he will discuss with Secretary General Kofi Annan future moves with regard to the UN-led peace process with him, following the refusal of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to go to New York for the talks.

Speaking on departure, the President also said he would be happy to see Denktash in New York, adding that he is ready to hold talks within the framework of UN resolutions, international conventions, European Union rules and regulations and European Court rulings.

Cyprus chief EU negotiator - US visit

Nicosia, Sep 10 (CNA) -- Former Cyprus President and the country's chief negotiator with the European Union, George Vasssiliou, is in Washington for a series of meetings with a view to brief US administration officials and others on current developments in the Cyprus question and inform them about the Republic's accession negotiations with Brussels.

Vassiliou's visit comes at a poignant juncture as President Glafcos Clerides flies to New York, responding to an invitation by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to resume peace talks. Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Dentkash has turned down the invitation, claiming there is no common ground to negotiate on, something the UN has contradicted.
