[01] UN report - De Soto - Statement

Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- The issue of the status of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides along with all other issues should be addressed through negotiations, not prior to negotiations and not by any other means, UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto has said, following the furor that Kofi Annan's human rights report in Cyprus has created.

De Soto has told CNA that it is a mistake to read anything more into this than the fact that some "inappropriate terminology inadvertently" found its way into the report, which will be reissued, and stressed that the only way the Cyprus question can be solved is through the Secretary-General's good offices.

Spokesman - UN report - Alvaro de Soto

Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has welcomed remarks by UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, who said the issue of the status of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides should be addressed through negotiations and not by any other means.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said de Soto's statement that the original text of a UN human rights report for Cyprus will be revised reaffirms what the UN had told the government, that the text was wrong and will be replaced.
