    [01] Defence lawyer - Imprisonment

    Nicosia, Feb 15 (CNA) - The Assize Court, which convened in Limassol, yesterday condemned defence lawyer Michalakis Kyprianou to five days imprisonment, after he was found guilty for contempt of court.

    Kyprianou had claimed the trial for the murder of Briton Graham Mills, in which he was the defence lawyer for one of the suspects, had gone off track because the three-judge panel had been exchanging "love-notes".

    [02] Cypriot MPs - Ireland

    Nicosia, Feb 15 (CNA) - Irish officials have reiterated their country's position on the Cyprus problem, noting that a solution must be based on UN resolutions. They also expressed support to Cyprus' European Union accession course.

    The Irish stance was set out during meetings a delegation of the Cyprus House of Representatives Foreign and European Affairs Committee had in Dublin over the past two days. The Cypriot MPs return to Cyprus tonight. CNA/RG/GP/2001

    [03] Institute for Eurodemocracy - EU - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Feb 15 (CNA) -- "We all need to do our outmost to mobilise our common effort" to achieve a solution to the Cyprus question, Former European Union (EU) Commissioner on enlargement Hans Van den Broek said here yesterday, speaking at a discussion, on "New prospects and challenges for the EU", organised by the Institute for Eurodemocracy in Nicosia.

    Greek Parliamentarian Marietta Yiannakou Koutsikou, speaking on "EU enlargement and the challenge posed by the Cyprus problem" said that "Cyprus is in a well advanced negotiating position" and has "concluded 17 out of 29 chapters, creating thus the necessary political dynamics towards accession".     �icosia, Feb 15 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 16/2/2001 to 17/2/2001

    Local showers and thunderstorms are expected for the period. Moderate to fresh westerly to southwesterly winds, will render a moderate and local rough sea.

    Maximum temperatures will range between 14-16C and minimum temperatures between 4-6C.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 18/2/2001 to 19/2/2001

    Mainly fine. Slight rise in temperature is expected.

    [06] Government Spokesman - Turkey - EU funds

    Nicosia, Feb 15 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou today expressed Cyprus' support to every action, which helps towards reforms within Turkey, adding that "the European Parliament's decision to pass funds in the direction of strengthening Turkey's European Union (EU) accession effort has been garnished by a series of significant political statements".

    Papapetrou noted that the Cyprus government considers certain ascertainments to be "important and positive", i.e. that "it is Turkey that applied for membership of the EU and it is this up to this country that must adapt itself to the EU terms and not the other way round". CNA/RG/GP/2001

    [07] Government Spokesman - Turkish Cypriot leader

    Nicosia, Feb 15 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today that the habit of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to stigmatise all opposing him was "antidemocratic and dangerous".

    Papapetrou said "Denktash, in his effort to cut off the expressed dissatisfaction of Turkish Cypriots, both regarding his policy and the way Ankara intervenes in everything, has named those disagreeing as an 'ideological disease'". CNA/RG/GP/2001
