  • [01] Cyprus Parliament - Bell helicopters Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) -- The Cyprus House of Representatives last night did not approve a 22-million-pound allocation for the purchase of four US-made Bell 412 helicopters for the National Guard, after a nearly four-hour-long heated discussion that ended in a tie vote. Of the MPs present, 26 deputies from right-wing DISI, the United Democrats, the Social Democrats and one DIKO MP voted in favour of the purchase, while an equal number from left-wing AKEL, DIKO and two Social Democrats MPs, including the party president, voted against.

  • [02] Spokesman - Plutonium Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stressed today that plutonium "had never been found on the island", adding that Cyprus had purchased special radioactive substances detectors. Commenting on press reports that claim Cyprus is involved in plutonium smuggling, Papapetrou noted that Cyprus is a member of the international nuclear material exports and trafficking control team and that such allegations often appear and, despite the fact that they are unfounded, investigations are carried out, without anything ever being found.   • [03] Illegal immigrants - British Bases Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) -- A British court, operating in one of the two military bases Britain, Dhekelia, has on the island, ordered 15 persons to be remanded in custody for seven days for illegal entry into the Bases. A press release, issued after the court proceedings, said "fifteen persons suspected of being illegal immigrants have been remanded in custody for seven days on a charge of illegally entering the Sovereign Base Areas."

  • [04] Cyprus - Doctors - India Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) - The multimember team of Cypriot doctors, who were to fly to India on February 5 to assist the victims of the recent devastating earthquake that hit the country, has called off its trip, after the Indian government announced it did not need the services of foreign doctors. Doctor Eleni Theocharous, President of the Cyprus "Doctors of the World" team, told CNA that the Indian government, through its High Commission in Nicosia, had notified the Cyprus Foreign Ministry that it would not be accepting foreign doctors, as its needs had been covered by local medical staff from other parts of the quake-stricken country.   • [05] Petroleum installations - Moving - Agreement Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) - The Cyprus government and the Larnaca municipal authorities signed an agreement today to move the petroleum installations from the southeastern coastal town of Larnaca to the new energy zone in Vassiliko, on the Mediterranean island's southern coast. Speaking at the ceremony, Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said the decision to move the installations was taken in order to expand the Larnaca tourist area and to create strategic petroleum stores, with stocks to last 90 days.   • [06] Spokesman - Cyprus problem Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today that there was "unofficial information" that the United Nations were drafting a complete set of ideas on the Cyprus problem, but noted that there was nothing official yet, nor any details. Asked where the set of ideas would be submitted, as Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is refusing to attend a new round of talks on the Cyprus problem, the Government Spokesman said that the process of the talks and the basis of a solution have been set out in UN Resolution 1250, which provides for talks without any preconditions, all issues on the table, talks until an agreement is reached and in full consideration of UN resolutions.   • [07] Tourist Guides World Convention - Press conference Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) - Illegal guiding is the most serious problem, tourist guides worldwide face today, President of the Cyprus Tourist Guides Association Popi Hadjidemetriou told a press conference here today, at the end of the 9th World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations Convention, organised in Cyprus from January 29 until February 2, under the title "The 21st Century: Guiding for Peace". Hadjidemetriou noted that the problem of illegal guiding as well as other problems tourist guides face were discussed during the Convention, where 85 participants from 18 countries had also the opportunity to hear speeches and lectures and attend workshops aimed at promoting the level of professional tourist guides.
