[01] Cyprus Parliament - Bell helicopters
Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) -- The Cyprus House of Representatives last night did
not approve a 22-million-pound allocation for the purchase of four US-made
Bell 412 helicopters for the National Guard, after a nearly four-hour-long
heated discussion that ended in a tie vote.
Of the MPs present, 26 deputies from right-wing DISI, the United Democrats,
the Social Democrats and one DIKO MP voted in favour of the purchase, while
an equal number from left-wing AKEL, DIKO and two Social Democrats MPs,
including the party president, voted against.

Spokesman - Plutonium
Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stressed
today that plutonium "had never been found on the island", adding that
Cyprus had purchased special radioactive substances detectors.
Commenting on press reports that claim Cyprus is involved in plutonium
smuggling, Papapetrou noted that Cyprus is a member of the international
nuclear material exports and trafficking control team and that such
allegations often appear and, despite the fact that they are unfounded,
investigations are carried out, without anything ever being found.

Cyprus - Doctors - India
Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) - The multimember team of Cypriot doctors, who were to
fly to India on February 5 to assist the victims of the recent devastating
earthquake that hit the country, has called off its trip, after the Indian
government announced it did not need the services of foreign doctors.
Doctor Eleni Theocharous, President of the Cyprus "Doctors of the World"
team, told CNA that the Indian government, through its High Commission in
Nicosia, had notified the Cyprus Foreign Ministry that it would not be
accepting foreign doctors, as its needs had been covered by local medical
staff from other parts of the quake-stricken country.

Spokesman - Cyprus problem
Nicosia, Feb 2 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today
that there was "unofficial information" that the United Nations were
drafting a complete set of ideas on the Cyprus problem, but noted that
there was nothing official yet, nor any details.
Asked where the set of ideas would be submitted, as Turkish Cypriot leader
Rauf Denktash is refusing to attend a new round of talks on the Cyprus
problem, the Government Spokesman said that the process of the talks and
the basis of a solution have been set out in UN Resolution 1250, which
provides for talks without any preconditions, all issues on the table,
talks until an agreement is reached and in full consideration of UN
resolutions.
