    [02] Cyprus - Varosha - UN - Protest

    Nicosia, Dec 7 (CNA) - The UN have frequently protested to the Turkish military authorities in Turkish occupied Cyprus in connection with moves made in violation of the status quo of the fenced area of Famagusta, Varosha, on the east of the island, UN spokeswoman Sarah Russell told CNA today.

    She also said some of the UN protests were taken into consideration and acted upon but others went unheeded, adding that the UN has had several contacts with the government of Cyprus on Varosha, the fenced area of the city of Famagusta which has remained uninhabited since the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of part of the island.

    [03] European Union - Charter of Fundamental Rights

    By Rebekah Gregoriades Nice, France, Dec 7 (CNA) -- The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union was singed here in Nice this afternoon by the 15 members states.

    It states that "the peoples of Europe, in creating an ever closer union among them, are resolved to share a peaceful future based on common values" and that "conscious of its spiritual and moral heritage, the Union is founded on the indivisible, universal values of human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity; it is based on the principles of democracy and the rule of law".     [04] Cyprus Foreign Minister - European Conference

    By Rebekah Gregoriades Nice, France Dec 7 (CNA) - Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides described today's European Conference as very helpful for the Republic's European Union (EU) accession course.

    Kasoulides told Cypriot journalists in Nice that Cyprus has opinions about the future of the EU and that the member states should view the Republic as one of their future partners.

    [05] EU enlargement Commissioner - Cyprus

    By Rebekah Gregoriades Nice, France Dec 7 (CNA) - European Union (EU) Commissioner responsible for enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, said here today that the 15-member block was cooperating with the UN and the US, so that Cyprus' EU accession course would assist efforts to solve the problem on the island.

    Speaking at a press conference here, on the sidelines of the European Conference, Verheugen expressed optimism that talks to solve the Cyprus problem would continue, despite the negative stance of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash regarding a sixth round of proximity talks, which the UN Secretary- General has invited the two sides to.     [06] Greek Foreign Minister - Cyprus question - Turkish stance

    By Rebekah Gregoriades Nice, France Dec 7 (CNA) - Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou has said that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash would be condemning the Turkish Cypriots to exclusion from the European Union (EU), if he did not cooperate towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Papandreou told Cypriot journalists in Nice that Turkey's stance on the Cyprus problem may also affect its possibilities of receiving EU funding.

    [07] Solana - EU - Cyprus peace effort

    By Rebekah Gregoriades Nice, France, Dec 7 (CNA) -- European Union High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, has said the 15-member block was interested in the UN-led talks on the Cyprus problem and expressed support to the UN Secretary-General's effort to reach a settlement.

    Solana said he hoped the talks "will continue under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General". CNA/RG/MA/2000
