    [03] OSCE - Russia - Corruption

    by Riana Magidou Limassol, Oct 5 (CNA) - A proposal for the establishment of an International Coordination Centre on Control over leakage of capital was presented today by Chairman of the Committee on Security of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Alexander Gurov, during an Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe seminar on organised crime and corruption, taking place in Limassol.

    Gurov referred to the results of economic reforms in Russia and the reasons of corruption in his country and noted that corruption has increased, due to the absence of the necessary legislative base in the field of taxation and economy, among other reasons. CNA/RM/MK/RG/2000

    [04] Spokesman - European Parliament - Resolution

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) - The government has welcomed a resolution on Cyprus' accession course towards the European Union, noting that it also sends a message to Turkey about its own accession process.

    "We welcome the resolution as well as the adoption of a report by the Rapporteur of the Committee on External Relations of the European Parliament Jacques Poos," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    The resolution, he added, sends a message to Ankara about its political and social obligations the European Union has set out as precondition to membership. CNA/MM/RG/2000

    [05] OSCE - Seminar - Kondrad - Drug trafficking in human beings

    by Riana Magidou Limassol, Oct 5 (CNA) - Experts estimate that 700.000 to 2 million women and children in the world are being used for trafficking drugs in human beings, Coordinator of the Stability Pact Task Force on Trafficking in Human Beings, Helga Kondrad, said today, adding that the problem of this form of drug trafficking is expanding dramatically.

    Speaking at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's Seminar on "Organised Crime and Corruption", taking place in Limassol, Kondrad said that "trafficking is one of the fastest growing and most lucrative criminal enterprises in the world", adding that "profits from this industry are enormous, generating billions of dollars annually to organised crime groups".     [06] British High Commissioner - AKEL leader

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) - British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Edward Clay, said today that his country's "preference is for a bicommunal, bizonal federal solution to the Cyprus problem".

    Speaking after a meeting with opposition leftwign AKEL party General Secretary, Demetris Christofias, Clay said "Britain continues to put its effort behind the search for a settlement, which is being conducted by the UN within that process as we proved in New York." CNA/NMA/RG/GP/2000

    [07] Cyprus - Egypt - Agreement - Health

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) - Cyprus and Egypt have signed a cooperation agreement in the public health and medical science sectors.

    The agreement signed yesterday in Cairo provides for the exchange of information and specialists, the development of cooperation between foundations and organisations, and the coordination of actions from both governments at an international level, especially in the context of the World Health Organisation.     [08] OSCE - Seminar - Closing remarks

    by Riana Magidou Limassol, Oct 5 (CNA) - President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Adrian Severin, said today that international cooperation is essential to combat organised crime and corruption.

    In his closing remarks at the two-day seminar on organised crime and corruption, held in Limassol, Severin said that these phenomena are dangerous and undermine OSCE's efforts to build democracy. CNA/RM/RG/2000

    [09] Foreign Minister - Cyprus problem

    Larnaca, Oct 5 (CNA) - Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, today expressed satisfaction with Britain's policy on the Cyprus problem, which is based on the search for a bizonal, bicommunal federation, complying fully with the relevant UN resolutions.

    Speaking at Larnaca Airport on his return to Cyprus, Kasoulides said that after his trip to New York, where UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem were held, he flew to London, where he met Britain's Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, Commonwealth leaders and Cypriot community leaders.     Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) � An 8-year-old Greek Cypriot girl, Andria Gregoriou, suffering from leukaemia, underwent successfully yesterday a bone marrow transplant at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston of Texas.

    Cyprus Health Minister Frixos Savvides announced here today that the donor was a 27- year-old Turkish Cypriot man, living in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkish troops.

    Nicosia, Oct 5 (CNA) -- Offitec 2000, a five-day exhibition specialised in office equipment and technology, will open on October 11 in Nicosia.
