    [04] EU - Cyprus - Chief negotiators

Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- The chief negotiators in the Cyprus Republic's accession talks with the European Union, George Vassiliou and Leopold Maurer, respectively, today underlined the importance of an EU decision to make Cyprus and Malta the first candidate countries responsible to allocate funds given to them.

Talking after a meeting here the two men stressed the need for the accession process to be given a push forward, even though Cyprus continues to be ahead of the other five countries that also opened talks in 1998.

[05] US Presidential Emmissary - Cyprus

by Maria Myles New York, Sep 14 (CNA) - The US continues to support fully a solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation, US Presidential Emissary Alfred Moses said here today, adding that the issue of political status of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides is a matter to be taken up as part of a comprehensive settlement.

Moses also said he did not consider a statement by UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan as a step forward towards recognition of the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus and expressed hope the fracas caused by Annan's statement will die out.

    [06] UN - Cyprus issue - Clarifications

by Maria Myles New York, Sep 14 (CNA) -- The UN clarified here today that a statement made by Secretary General Kofi Annan, on the first day the Cyprus peace talks resumed, cannot be taken to imply recognition of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus, a step towards recognition of the regime or the "derecognition" of the Republic of Cyprus.

The clarifications were given by the UN chief's Special Adviser to Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, who called on President Glafcos Clerides at his hotel, after the President did not attend yesterday's meeting with him at the international organisation's headquarters in New York and a meeting scheduled to take place earlier Thursday was delayed.

[07] US officials - Cyprus question - UN statement

by Maria Myles New York, Sep 14 (CNA) -- US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus Alfred Moses described here today a statement by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on the Cyprus peace talks as positive, in that it attempts to move things forward.

In brief statements to the press after a meeting with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, he said the statement, which lead President Glafcos Clerides to the decision not to attend a meeting with Annan's special adviser on Cyprus yesterday, is "certainly not biased."
