    Washington, Aug 1 (CNA) - The US Republican Party encourages a peaceful settlement for Cyprus, which will benefit the people of Cyprus and serve US, Greek and Turkish interests.

    In a statement on Europe issued during the party's meeting in Philadelphia, the Republicans note that "we encourage a peaceful solution for Cyprus and the respect by parties for the wishes of the Cypriot people", adding that "a fair and lasting Cyprus settlement will benefit the people of Cyprus as well as serve the interest of America and our allies, Greece and Turkey".     [02] New US Ambassador to Turkey - Cyprus problem

    Washington, Aug 1 (CNA) - The new US Ambassador to Turkey, Robert Pearson, said yesterday that "Turkey and Greece have taken momentous steps to seize new opportunities to work together and are supporting UN efforts to reach a just and comprehensive settlement on Cyprus".

    Speaking during his swearing in ceremony, in the presence of US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, Pearson said that "negotiations for a resolution of the Cyprus issue continue, and the United States support the efforts of the UN and the parties to take advantage of this moment".     [03] Cyprus - Aviation - Regional cooperation

    Nicosia, Aug 1 (CNA) - Cyprus has undertaken an initiative in the field of technology and cooperation in air traffic control to create the first regional mechanism in this sector.

    An official statement reads that a meeting took place yesterday in Nicosia between representatives of the Civil Aviation Departments of Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan and Israel, during which methods of cooperation in air traffic control were discussed and it was agreed to draw up a Regional Protocol towards this end, to be signed within the year 2000 by the four countries.

    The meeting was attended by representatives of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and Eurocontrol.

    [04] President Clerides - UN Adviser - Talks

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Aug 1 (CNA) - The Cyprus delegation to the UN- led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, headed by President Glafcos Clerides, met here today for about an hour with the UN chief's Special Adviser for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto.

    After the meeting, which took place at the UN headquarters in Geneva, President Clerides said that "we worked quite well today". CNA/MA/RG/GP/2000
