[01] Greek FM - UN Special Adviser

Athens, Jun 22 (CNA) -- UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto today said his assumption is that both Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash will go to Geneva for the third round of proximity talks scheduled to start on July 5.

He was speaking to the press in Athens after a meeting today with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, who said de Soto reassured him that the UN will work for substantive negotiations between the two parties in Geneva.

    [02] Cyprus - EuroMed - Industry Ministers

Limassol, Jun 22 (CNA) - Cyprus has become a centre of business and financial activities having to display a distinguishing telecommunications and transportation network connected with almost all countries, President Glafcos Clerides said here today.

Addressing the 3rd EuroMediterranean Conference of Ministers of Industry held in the southern coastal town of Limassol, President Clerides noted that "the advantages Cyprus enjoys due to its geopolitical position, are reinforced by its accession negotiations with the European Union", which allows the island to become "a bridge of peace and cooperation between the EU and the countries of Mediterranean".

[03] Cyprus Spokesman - Peace talks

Nicosia, Jun 22 (CNA) - The Cyprus government believes that the Turkish Cypriot leader is trying to get away from substantive negotiations for a comprehensive settlement, through various ploys, and considers that he should not be allowed to get away with such behaviour.

Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stressed the government invests a lot in the UN peace process, which is the only means the Cyprus question can be settled, and warns that it will not facilitate Rauf Denktash in his attempts to abandon the process without any fallout.

    [08] Cyprus - EU - Turkey - Court

Brussels, Jun 22 (CNA) A Greek Cypriot has asked the European Union member states to intervene in the direction of Turkey to persuade Ankara of the need to comply with a European Court of Human Rights ruling relating to human rights violations in Cyprus.

"EU members, as contracting parties to the Council of Europe conventions, have unanimously asked Turkey to execute the Court judgment unconditionally, but at the same time, the same states as EU members appear to have adopted a somewhat different approach on the same issue," Titina Loizidou told a press conference here today, after two days of meetings with EU officials.
